At the foot of La Lora, Revelillas is surrounded by beech and oak forests. Hiking trails, the historic wolf trap Pozo de los Lobos and Romanesque details at the parish church of San Esteban offer different points of interest. Landscape and architectural history sit side by side, so exploring the area need not be limited to a single theme.

Forest Trails and Circular Route

The Revelillas–Pozo de los Lobos–Mirador de Valcabado circular route starts and ends in Revelillas. It is 10.51 kilometres long, has 375 metres of positive elevation gain and an estimated total duration of four hours. This gives you an outline of a longer activity to plan for; the stated duration remains an estimate. The circular route leads to two notable destinations and connects them with stretches through the surrounding landscape.

From Plaza de Revelillas, the route climbs along a track through a Pyrenean oak forest. After 200 metres along the marked turnoff is Pozo de los Lobos. On the way back to Revelillas, the route passes through the beech forest of Monte Ahedo. Another path to Mirador de Valcabado goes through Hayedo de Revelillas and is one of the most frequently used routes there.

Pozo de los Lobos is a dry-stone structure used for wolf hunting over many centuries. Two walls arranged in a triangle extend several hundred metres apart and converge at a deep, circular pit where the wolf was to be trapped. The widely spaced walls and deep, circular pit together define the form of the wolf trap.

Near Revelillas, Mirador de Valcabado is located on the edge of La Lora de Valdivia, in Pomar de Valdivia in the province of Palencia. A route from Revelillas reaches the viewpoint. It sits on a natural balcony above the beech forest of Monte Ahedo and offers a view over the Valderredible valley. The circular route thus leads from a historic structure to a scenic destination; the viewpoint is also part of a separate route from Revelillas.

Romanesque Heritage and Local History

The parish church of San Esteban has Romanesque origins. It was rebuilt several times over the course of the Gothic period, including in the 15th century, and in later eras. The bell-gable wall and the baptismal font are the surviving parts of the Romanesque structure. The font is carefully decorated, hemispherical and made of sandstone limestone. It offers a specific detail of the Romanesque heritage to explore, while the church’s architectural history spans several eras.

A regional travel guide published in 2015 included San Esteban in a route featuring Romanesque baptismal fonts. For travellers interested in this architectural form, the church links a local place to visit with a cultural theme that extends beyond Revelillas. The route offers a different perspective on San Esteban from the history of its alterations: here, the baptismal font is the specific object in focus.

Cueva del Tío Moreno is also one of Revelillas’ notable historic sites. The small hypogeum lies beneath the cemetery, is carved into sandstone and is well preserved. Four threshing-floor huts have also survived outside the village. These features differ in function and form from the church and the wolf trap, adding to the picture of local architectural history.

A Neolithic axe was found in 2017 on a field parcel in Revelillas, in Valderredible. It has been held by the Museo de Prehistoria y ArqueologĂa de Cantabria (MUPAC) since 2019 and was intended to become part of the collection. Due to the rarity of such objects in the Autonomous Community, the find was described as very interesting. It could be among the oldest evidence of human settlement in the valley.

Cycling Route, Directions and Festive Days

For a different kind of exploration, a mountain biking track runs west from Revelillas, passing the Arregueras reservoir and reaching Pomar de Valdivia after just over eight kilometres. The reservoir was built to provide water for irrigation. This route has a different focus from the circular route: it heads from Revelillas towards Pomar de Valdivia, while the circular route returns to its starting point.

Revelillas can be reached via the CA-273, which connects Villanueva de la Nía with Quintanilla de las Torres in Palencia. About one kilometre from Villanueva de la Nía, the CA-751 branches off towards Villamoñico; a local road then leads to Revelillas. This sequence helps you follow the approach via the named places.

The local feast of San Esteban is celebrated on 3 August and 27 December. The two dates fall in different seasons and may be relevant when planning the timing of a stay. If you plan to travel on either date, you can check the festival programme in advance.
