A restored 17th-century manor house is home to the Casa de la Naturaleza de Pesaguero. The exhibition is devoted to the natural features of the Liébana comarca. This makes the Casa a practical starting point for travellers who want to explore nature and culture together.

Understanding nature and finding your way around the routes

The Casa’s guides provide information about the area’s natural and cultural values, public access, and guided and self-guided routes. This range is useful when planning a trip: in addition to the landscape, it covers how the routes are used and which formats are available. The Casa is located within the Liébana Natura 2000 site and the brown bear recovery area. If you would first like to consider the kind of discoveries you plan to make when choosing accommodation, you can treat nature, cultural questions and route formats as separate areas of focus.

Las Colladillas: forests and older paths

The Las Colladillas route passes through Mediterranean and Atlantic forest landscapes. The habitats there include those with holm oaks, Pyrenean oaks and beech trees. This is a useful point of reference for travellers who want to look out for different forest types and tree species along a route.

Las Colladillas also passes remains of old fortifications and traces of old, almost forgotten dehesas. The route also follows a network of footpaths and old tracks. This lets you shift your focus between forest habitats and traces of earlier land use: natural and cultural history are part of the same route description here.

Camino Lebaniego: stage and route through the villages

A stage of the Camino Lebaniego from Pesaguero to Santo Toribio de Liébana is listed as 23.4 kilometres and six hours. One section of the Camino passes through Pesaguero, continues to Avellanedo and then heads west to the hamlet of La Parte. Near Pesaguero, pilgrims, hikers and cycling tourists regularly use the route.

The stage details and the sequence of villages answer different planning questions: the first gives the distance and duration to Santo Toribio, while the second locates the route through Pesaguero and onwards to La Parte. This makes it possible to distinguish a stage with a stated distance from a description of the route through the named places.

Architectural history in Pesaguero and La Parte

The surviving structure of the Ermita de la Inmaculada Concepción may have been built in the final years of the 13th century or even in the 14th century. Its architecture includes a rectangular apse chapel with an eight-part ribbed vault. The central keystone bears a relief of a floral cross. The tentative dating and the specific architectural features offer two different ways to explore the hermitage: its possible date of construction and the layout of its chapel.

La Parte is characterised by dense tree cover. El Abuelo can be visited there. It is located at El Cuénere, a little way from the village houses. This distinction is useful for finding your way: La Parte names the hamlet, while El Cuénere gives the more specific location of El Abuelo.
