Playa de Usil lies at the mouth of the natural Ría del Pas; a circular route leads from Mogro to the Ermita de la Virgen del Monte and back. A visit to the beach puts the coast in the foreground, while the route connects the Church of San Martín in Mogro with the hermitage. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh whether the coastal landscape, churches and shrine, or both, will be the deciding factor.

Playa de Usil: beach and dunes

Playa de Usil is unspoilt and characterised by small dunes. The beach is 250 metres long and 15 metres wide. Its facilities and low level of danger make it particularly suitable for families with children. There are playgrounds and walking areas nearby. This makes it possible to combine a beach visit with an interest in the coast, play facilities or a walk in the surrounding area. Facilities may change; check the current situation before your visit.

Circular route from Mogro to the hermitage

The circular route from Mogro to the Ermita de la Virgen del Monte is of moderate difficulty, 5.01 kilometres long and takes about 26 minutes. It starts beside the Church of San Martín Obispo in Mogro. From there, it follows Calle San Martín and the Camino Histórico del Norte to the CA-322; the road then leads to the hermitage. After reaching the destination, the route heads north along the CA-232 back to Mogro, the starting point. This makes it easy to follow the route via named roads to a clearly defined destination. Trail conditions and signage may change; check the current route before setting out.

Church of San Martín and Ermita de la Virgen del Monte

The Church of San Martín in Mogro is the oldest surviving building in the municipality. The present building may date from the late 15th or early 16th century. A tower house is attached to the church; it may have existed before being used as a bell tower and possibly served as a residence. These tentative dates and interpretations form part of the building’s history, but do not establish exactly when it was built.

The Ermita de la Virgen del Monte represents a different historical focus. It became the most important shrine of the Honor. Families of sailors and fishermen often visited the shrine; numerous objects connected with the sea bear witness to this. The church and the hermitage thus represent different aspects of local history: on the one hand, a surviving municipal building with an attached tower house; on the other, a shrine with a history of maritime devotion. The circular route leads to both places, making this contrast a tangible theme for the visit.

Festivals in August

The municipal tourism plan for 2025 lists the Fiestas de la Virgen del Monte on 24 August and the Fiesta de la Diosa Ecología on the last Sunday in August in Mogro. These dates refer to the 2025 plan. If a festival is to determine your travel dates, check the programme for the year you plan to travel.

The Pas estuary in the wider regional area

In the wider regional area around Mogro, the Liencres Dunes and Costa Quebrada Natural Park includes, among other places, the estuary of the River Pas. This offers a broader landscape context for the coastal and estuarine area, while Playa de Usil and the circular route shape visits to Mogro itself. Before visiting the natural park, check the applicable access requirements.
