Gornazo lies in a valley crossed by the Briñas and Troncón streams; part of the terrain rises towards the Sierra de Cumbreo. It is also home to the Church of San Nicolás and three routes with different starting and finishing points. This gives you several ways to plan your trip, focusing on the landscape, architectural history or routes with a specific destination.

Routes with Different Destinations

The “CASTRO DEL CUETO” circular route runs between Gornazo and Mogro and leads to the remains of an ancient Cantabrian hillfort. There may be no visitor facilities at the archaeological remains, so do not expect any amenities there.

The “MOGRO GORNAZO” route follows the Camino Histórico del Norte from Mogro to the Church of San Nicolás de Bari in Gornazo. Route conditions and signage may change; check both before setting out.

The “RUTA POR EL INTERIOR” starts next to Gornazo station and returns to Gornazo. This means that when comparing the routes, the starting point matters as well as the destination: the Castro circular route leads to archaeological remains, MOGRO GORNAZO ends at the church, and the RUTA POR EL INTERIOR starts at the station.

The Church and Local History

The old Church of San Nicolás was restored and extended in the 17th century. In the municipal architectural inventory published in 2015, Gornazo’s church is listed as a building of interest in protection category 1. Its features include a single-nave layout, a bell gable, a porch and a polygonal apse. “Single-nave” refers to a main nave, while “polygonal” describes the apse’s multi-sided shape. These features help place the building in context through its history, floor plan and individual architectural elements.

Gornazo grew up around the Church of San Nicolás on a historic route towards Santillana. The Gornazo entrance portal is listed in the municipal architectural inventory published in 2015 as a memorial portal in protection category 1, and features an arch with pilasters.

Historically, Gornazo’s livelihoods included growing maize, beans, wheat and potatoes, as well as raising cattle and sheep. These farming activities add a perspective on the residents’ former daily lives to the architectural history.

Horse Riding, Rail and Accommodation Planning

Centro Ecuestre Los Caballos de Atamauri, based in Gornazo, offers horse-riding courses and lessons. Check in advance whether public bookings are possible and whether places are currently available.

Renfe CercanĂas AM trains stop in Gornazo and connect Miengo with Santander and Torrelavega. Check the current timetables for your travel date. Since the RUTA POR EL INTERIOR starts next to the station, this starting point may be useful if you want to include rail travel in your route planning.

If you are considering Gornazo as a place to stay overnight, you can plan around your preferred activities and the rail connection. Consider whether the town’s history and church, a particular route destination or the train journey is the deciding factor for you. This lets you match your stay to your travel plans without assuming that a route has to be part of a fixed day’s itinerary.
