Visitors who choose Hoznayo can explore its architectural history and landscape as two distinct ways of discovering the place. Palaces, a church, and a stone gateway provide historical highlights; the Aguanaz is home to a spring area and a natural bridge. The San Lucas Fair, with its long history, is another feature. Hoznayo thus brings together tangible architecture, landscape, and local heritage.

Palaces, a Church, and Stonework

The Palacio de los Acebedos is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). Fernando de Acebedo commissioned the building in the first half of the 17th century. Its two-storey central section has a tower at each end. The complex also includes a family burial chapel dedicated to Saint John. The construction period, the commissioner, and the chapel each offer a distinct point of reference in the palace’s local history.

The Iglesia de la Asunción dates from the 16th century. Its main altarpiece is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, while the side aisles feature Baroque sculpture. The baptismal font in Hoznayo’s parish church is a fine example of Romanesque work from the 12th century. The church therefore brings together several artistic highlights: the Marian altarpiece, the Baroque decoration of the side aisles, and the much older baptismal font.

The Portalada de Carasa-Arredondo dates from around 1680. Notable for its architecture and heraldry, it is considered one of the most remarkable examples of stonework in Entrambasaguas. At the Casa y capilla de los Condes de Torrehermosa, meanwhile, the external coat of arms stands out, recalling the founder’s arms. The two buildings thus offer different points of interest: the portalada for its stonework and heraldry, and the coat of arms for its connection to the founder.

Fuente del Francés and the History of the Aguanaz

The Aguanaz River flows through Hoznayo. The natural bridge at Fuente del Francés lies along its course. Fuente del Francés is a spring area of great scenic beauty and lush vegetation, located in Hoznayo on the old road to Villaverde de Pontones. The river, bridge, and spring area are tangible landscape features that sit alongside the town’s historic buildings.

The history of the Balneario de la Fuente del Francés spa is also part of this area’s heritage. The spa began operating in the late 1870s. Records state that in 1891 four springs flowed there at a temperature of 23 °C. The Molino del Trancar was one of two mills in the Fuente del Francés complex. The recorded history of the area thus encompasses both the spa and the mill, while the information about the springs specifically relates to 1891.

San Lucas: Official Festival Status and the History of the Fair

The Ferias y Fiestas de San Lucas de Hoznayo have official status as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Cantabria (Festival of Tourist Interest in Cantabria). The San Lucas Fair dates back to 1521; it was held under a privilege granted by the Junta de Ávila. Historically, the fair included a market for agricultural and craft products. One historical source locates it near the palaces known as Oznayo, in the place called Término. The festival’s official status, the privilege, and the market tradition are different aspects of the San Lucas story, connecting official recognition with the fair’s long history.

If you’re looking for a holiday apartment, this combination can help you decide: consider whether architectural history, the Aguanaz landscape, and the history of the San Lucas Fair match your travel priorities.
