The Camino de Santiago de la Costa branches off towards Maliaño and reaches upper Maliaño. Other points of interest include archaeological sites, the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, and Montezuco and Punta Parayas beach.
Archaeological sites and church
The archaeological site at Maliaño cemetery has been protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the archaeological zone category since 14 March 2002. The Roman-medieval site at San Juan cemetery is also located in Alto Maliaño. The municipality describes it as significant local heritage. This makes it possible to distinguish two archaeological points of interest with different chronological classifications.
The tomb of Juan de Herrera, architect of the monastery of El Escorial and a major benefactor of the town, is located in the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista. The church also contains three altarpieces. The tomb connects the church with Juan de Herrera’s association with El Escorial; the altarpieces are another specific feature of its interior.
The Camino de Santiago de la Costa
The Camino de Santiago de la Costa branches off towards Maliaño and follows existing paths and footpaths to upper Maliaño. If you include this section in your plans, check the route conditions before your visit, as they can change. The route to upper Maliaño is therefore a separate point to consider when finding your way around the area.
The Festival del Cachón
Every spring, the Festival del Cachón takes place in Maliaño, specifically at Punta de Parayas. It promotes the local tradition of catching cachón. The programme includes a public tasting, a trip out to sea and gastronomic days. Annual programme details may vary, so check the specific festival dates before your trip.
Montezuco and Punta Parayas
Montezuco is located in the Sierra de Parayas in Maliaño and is one of Camargo’s ecologically restored natural areas. The area is intended for public recreational use and environmental education. Punta Parayas offers a different kind of landscape: its beach is an artificial saltwater pool, with one end open to the bay.
Punta Parayas beach has a car park, a park, barbecue areas, walking areas and a cycle path. Check the facilities and access arrangements before your visit. This part of Maliaño therefore features both a natural area intended for recreation and environmental education, and a beach with specific visitor facilities.
Arriving and finding your way around
Parayas Airport is located in Maliaño and serves as an arrival and departure point for visitors travelling to many destinations. Flight connections may change, so check current services when planning your trip. Along with the Camino, cultural sites, spring festival and natural areas, this offers a way to find your bearings based on specific local features rather than a set itinerary.
