Camaleño brings together the mountain landscapes of the Picos de Europa, pilgrim routes and a rich cultural heritage. Exploring the municipality offers a chance to take in a variety of landscapes, from glacial valleys and mountain meadows to forests, viewpoints and historic buildings. The religious significance of the Monasterio de Santo Toribio also shapes the character of the area.

Mountain Landscapes and Nature

Because of its ecological value, Camaleño is part of the Picos de Europa National Park. Among the distinctive landforms in the Camaleño area and the Picos de Europa is the Circo de Fuente Dé, a glacial and periglacial formation. The slopes of Valdebaró support varied vegetation: holm oak, Pyrenean oak and oak forests give way at higher elevations to beech and birch stands, subalpine shrubland and mountain pastures. The different elevation zones therefore bring a variety of plant landscapes into view.

The Hayedo de Salvorón provides habitat and a passageway for threatened species such as the brown bear, capercaillie and otter.

Viewpoints and Trails

The Teleférico de Fuente Dé covers a difference in elevation of 753 metres: the lower station in Fuente Dé is at 1,094 metres, and the Mirador del Cable at the upper station is at 1,847 metres. The viewpoint is in the municipality of Camaleño, 800 metres from Fuente Dé. From there, the view extends over the upper Deva basin and nearby beech forests. As weather and maintenance can affect operating conditions, check the latest operating information in advance.

Another viewpoint offers a different perspective: the Mirador de Santo Toribio is outside the national park, next to the Monasterio de Santo Toribio. From here, you can see the south side of the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. This lets you take in the mountain landscape from two different viewpoints without treating them as the same view.

The routes also differ in the landscapes they showcase. On the PR-PNPE 23 Ruta Horcados Rojos, the experience is shaped by high-mountain vegetation, rugged rocks with jagged peaks and alpine birds. By contrast, the PR-PNPE 24 Ruta Puertos de Áliva crosses extensive mountain meadows between the central and eastern massifs, then passes through dense forests on the southern slope of Pico de Valdecoro. These landscape highlights offer a practical way to compare the routes when choosing a hike.

Pilgrim Routes and Cultural Heritage

The Monasterio de Santo Toribio is an important religious centre and pilgrimage destination. It is one of four places in the world where a Jubilee can be obtained; the other places named are Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago de Compostela. The Camino Lebaniego also passes through Camaleño: the pilgrim route runs between San Vicente de la Barquera and the monastery. The church and its architectural history add to this religious heritage. The church is Gothic in style, with Cistercian influences, and includes the Baroque Lignum Crucis chapel.

In Mogrovejo, a medieval tower and the manor house attached to it form part of the architectural heritage. Together with the monastery, they offer different points of interest: a historic ensemble in one place, and a religious centre linked to pilgrimage in another. Those interested in the history of rural education can find another perspective at the Museo de la Escuela Rural in Mogrovejo. The museum recreates a traditional school from the Liébana region and celebrates rural education. It is housed in former school buildings; the permanent exhibition includes a reconstructed classroom with wooden desks, a blackboard and political maps. It is advisable to check seasonal visiting arrangements in advance.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Montaña in Espinama, a village in the municipality of Camaleño, uses images and objects to explain life in the mountains of the Liébana region. This offers a different perspective from the buildings and pilgrimage sites, focusing on life in the mountain region.

An Annual Event

The Fiesta de la Virgen de la Salud is celebrated every year on 2 July in a small chapel in the Praderías de los Puertos de Áliva, at an altitude of about 1,500 metres. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the programme for the relevant year, as individual details may change.
