Cabrojo can be explored through two clearly distinct themes: the schematic rock art of the Braña de los Pastores and trails through a flat river landscape. There is also the Ermita de Las Nieves and several named routes. You can therefore choose the focus of your stay based on cultural history, a walk or a cycling trip. Cabrojo lies in a low-lying, flat vega bordered to the south and east by the Saja River and to the north and west by the foothills of the mountains. For general journey planning, its location immediately beside exit 244 of the A-8 motorway is also a useful landmark.
Rock Art and Architectural History
The Braña de los Pastores comprises three sites with exposed sandstone outcrops and is considered one of the most significant examples of schematic rock engravings in Cantabria. One group within the Braña includes five sandstone outcrops and has the largest number and variety of engravings of the three sites. The rock art sites have been protected as Assets of Cultural Interest in the archaeological zone category; the protection was published in the BOE on 28 February 2013. The Conjunto de Cabrojo comprises schematic rock art dating from the post-Palaeolithic period.
Another point of cultural and historical interest is the Ermita de Las Nieves. It stands in a meadow in a natural setting, away from built-up areas. It was built in the late 17th or early 18th century, rebuilt in 1725 and restored in 1998. A casona in Cabrojo also dates from the first half of the 18th century. The rock art and buildings thus offer different cultural and historical focuses for your stay.
Walking and Cycling Routes
A walking trail along the edges of the mies connects Cabrojo and Casar. The Ruta de Las Nieves follows a different route: it can be taken from Cabrojo, leads to the Ermita de Las Nieves at an altitude of 240 metres and offers views across the Valle de Cabezón. These provide different points of interest for walkers: the trail between two places and the route to the Ermita, with views across the valley.
La Vuelta al Valle adds a cycling route through the Valle de Cabezón. It expands the options with a different way of getting around. You can choose between the walking trail along the edges of the mies, the route to the Ermita and a cycling trip through the valley, without treating the different options as a single route.
The approach to the Ermita from Casar first follows an asphalt road, then a ribbed concrete path and finally an unpaved track. Surfaces can change depending on the weather, so check conditions before your visit.
