Escalona has several specific points of reference when choosing where to stay: part of Escalona (La Escalona) lies within the Paisaje Protegido de Ifonche, bus routes connect the area with named destinations, and the Camino Real is part of its history. These landscape, transport and cultural connections can provide a starting point when searching for a holiday rental. Escalona lies at an altitude of around 1,000 metres above sea level; this approximate elevation is provided for geographical context.
Landscape and getting there
Part of Escalona (La Escalona) lies within the protected landscape area of Paisaje Protegido de Ifonche. The TF-567 road to the protected area begins in La Escalona and ends in the hamlet named after the landscape area. If you are factoring the road into your plans, check its current condition, as road conditions can change.
Two TITSA routes are relevant for travel. Route 342 connects La Escalona with Arona, Vilaflor, Parador de Turismo and Las Cañadas del Teide. Check the current timetable before travelling, as routes and times can change.
Historic routes and local history
Escalona’s origins date back to the 16th century. The settlement became established in the 17th century. Its first inhabitants were modest farmers and shepherds, who often moved their residence between Vilaflor and Arona. The historic Camino Real also links Escalona with the surrounding towns: it ran from Chasna through Escalona and on towards Arona, and from Vilaflor downhill towards the port of Los Cristianos. One of Escalona’s main streets is still called Camino Real.
Church and festivities
The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol was inaugurated in 1985. Inside are depictions of Santiago Apóstol, Nuestra Señora del Pilar and Christ. Every year on 25 July, the Fiestas de La Escalona honour Santiago Apóstol. Traditional celebrations include a religious service in honour of Santa Ana on 26 July. Overall, the festivities include religious services and popular events attended by many people.
A pilgrim account from 2025 describes the Camino del Hermano Pedro as a walk held annually on the last Saturday in April. The route runs between Jama and Vilaflor via La Escalona. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates and arrangements for the relevant edition.
