Tamaimo is a possible starting point for a trip that brings together hikes toward the Teno Massif and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Tamaimo, you can choose where to stay based on specific interests: trails through the landscape, the Parroquia Santa Ana in the town center, and seasonal highlights such as the almond blossom or the Fiestas Mayores. These themes offer different experiences; the best time to travel depends on what you would like to experience.

Location and hiking trails

Tamaimo lies at an altitude of 400 to 600 meters in a large valley ravine between the Teno Massif and the coast of Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes. Hiking trails from Tamaimo head toward the Teno Massif, including to Barranco Seco, Risco Blanco and the cliffs. The PR-TF 65 hiking trail also leads to Tamaimo.

Various hiking routes make Tamaimo a starting point and destination, connecting the town with places such as Santiago del Teide, Arguayo and El Molledo. One circular trail starts and ends in Tamaimo. When planning, you can choose between a loop that returns to its starting point and trails connecting the town with other settlements.

The Ruta de los Almendros en Flor passes through the area around Arguayo and Tamaimo and is especially appealing between January and March. The peak of the almond blossom can vary from year to year. This seasonal route adds a different seasonal focus to hiking destinations toward the Teno Massif.

Seasonal trails and traces of history

Part of a hiking trail runs along the old Camino Real. In the past, local residents used this route to trade fish for potatoes, almonds, figs and other essential staple foods. This historic exchange connects the trail to the community’s former food supply.

A traditional hiking trail once led to the cultivated terraces on Montaña Guama. The gentle slopes facing the sea were used to grow cereals and legumes. The old trails therefore also point to the agricultural use of the landscape.

Santa Ana: Local history and fiesta season

The Parroquia Santa Ana is in the center of Tamaimo and is easily reached on foot from anywhere in town. Its history dates back to September 15, 1568. On that day, Alonso González and Beatriz Báez expressed their wish to build a chapel dedicated to Santa Ana there. The first Mass at the parish church was celebrated on September 21, 1715. The two dates mark different steps: the early intention to build a chapel and the first Mass celebrated later.

The Fiestas Mayores in honor of the patron saint Santa Ana take place in late July and early August, usually from July 25 to August 3. The exact dates may vary from year to year. The usual program includes flower-filled dawn serenades, Masses and processions in honor of Santa Ana, dances with live music, popular sporting events such as cross-country races or swimming competitions, folk performances and Canarian music festivals, community meals, and activities for children.
