Discover Ingenio through its history of water and crafts: mills, irrigation and traditional work sit alongside folklore, festivals and a coast where wind and waves favor sailing and windsurfing. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether culture, local cuisine or Playa del Burrero will shape your stay. The different themes offer distinct starting points.

Landscape and coast

56 percent of Ingenio’s municipal area is designated as protected natural space. If you want to use this figure for your planning, check the current boundaries and percentages. The figure describes the extent of designated protected areas, not access to a specific place.

Playa del Burrero is suitable for sailing and windsurfing due to the trade winds and wave conditions. These conditions can vary seasonally. Together, Playa del Burrero and the small Playa de San AgustĂn have about 500 meters of coastline, with a bathing area of sand and pebbles. Current conditions are key to any beach or water sports plans.

Water, mills and local history

The Church of La Candelaria dates from 1901 and was built on the remains of an earlier chapel of the same name. Its bells were cast in 1820 by migrants from Gran Canaria in Cuba and donated to the church. The building’s history thus brings together an older chapel, a later church and bells originating in Cuba.

The Museo del Agua y del Azúcar traces Ingenio’s development from the 15th century to the present through the theme of water. It comprises three independent mill buildings connected by irrigation channels. The channels carry water from the Barranco de Guayadeque. The Molino de los López watermill offers a further perspective on local milling history: it dates from the 19th century and was used to grind grain for gofio until the mid-20th century.

The Casa del Reloj is also connected to irrigation and belongs to the Real Acequia de Aguatona. Farmers set their clocks by the association’s clock to buy the water needed for irrigation. The mills and Casa del Reloj are therefore not just buildings, but also show how water and work were linked.

Crafts, folklore and festivals

Calado lacework continues to be made in local households as a distinctive local craft tradition. The Taller Municipal de Cerámica showcases traditional crafts such as ceramics, palm weaving, iron and brass work, stoneworking, reed work, Calado lacework, Canarian knives and Trapera textiles. There is a work area and kilns on the first floor.

The Festival Internacional de Folclore “Muestra Solidaria de los Pueblos” is organized every year by the cultural association Coros y Danzas de Ingenio. The program includes daily performances, parades and workshops; dates and program items may vary. The Museo del Festival Internacional de Folclore displays clothing and objects provided by more than 150 embassies of countries participating in the festival. Interactive screens and a screening room are also part of the museum; traditional Canarian dances such as Folia and Isa are presented there. As exhibits and programs may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before visiting.

The route through the historic centers of Ingenio and Carrizal passes along streets with sculptures and murals. Carnival celebrations last several days and take place in different parts of the municipality, including Ingenio center, Carrizal and Playa del Burrero. The program includes concerts, costume competitions, Murga competitions and parades, among other events. Dates and program details may vary.

Cuisine and planning

Ingenio’s traditional cuisine includes goat meat, roast pork, papas arrugadas with mojo, Garbanzos compuestos, sweet morcilla and local cheese. The typical “pan de puño” bread is also traditionally made in Ingenio and available to buy.
