For a stay in Ea, you can focus on the beach, town centre or routes. Swimming is possible at Playa de Ea, while the town centre is characterised by fishermen’s houses, canals and bridges. Churches and a historic industrial complex add to the area’s architectural heritage. There are also specific points to explore when planning your trip, including a route along the RĂa de Ea and the Argiñerreka stream, as well as the Talako Ama viewpoint. You can plan your trip around whether you would like to prioritise time by the water, architecture or walking routes.
Swimming at Playa de Ea
Swimming is possible at Playa de Ea, which has public showers. Lifeguard supervision is provided seasonally. If supervised swimming is important to you, check when lifeguards are on duty before visiting the beach. This will help you plan your time by the water.
Fishermen’s houses, bridges and churches
In the town centre, traditional, colourful fishermen’s houses line narrow streets and canals, which are crossed by bridges. Two Romanesque-style bridges are also part of the town centre. Together with the houses, they give the centre a distinctive architectural character to look out for as you explore Ea.
The historic heritage also includes two churches in different styles: San Juan Bautista is in the Renaissance style, while Santa MarĂa de JesĂşs is Baroque. Those interested in architecture will find several specific examples that illustrate the diversity of Ea’s architectural heritage.
The FerrerĂa y Molino Urtubiaga
The FerrerĂa y Molino Urtubiaga is a residential and industrial complex comprising four interconnected buildings. The site includes a hydraulic system with a weir, channel and regulating basin, as well as a stone bridge opposite the buildings. The residences and industrial buildings, waterworks and bridge make the ensemble easy to understand as a coherent site, rather than focusing on a single building.
In 2013, the FerrerĂa y Molino Urtubiaga in Ea was entered in the General Inventory of Basque Cultural Heritage as a cultural asset in the Conjunto Monumental category. This designation adds the ensemble’s cultural and historical significance to the architectural details.
Routes and viewpoint
The BUS01 Ea-Erreketa route follows the RĂa de Ea and the Argiñerreka stream before leading to the FerrerĂa de Urtubiaga. It connects two waterways with a specific destination in the town’s architectural heritage. Another option is the PR BI 169 Ea, por el Camino de los Reyes, which is rated easy and is 4.8 kilometres long. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The Talako Ama viewpoint can be reached from Ea harbour via a walking trail.
