In Busturi-Axpe, landscapes, hiking trails and local history offer a range of themes for a stay. Atxapunte lies between Axpe and San Bartolomé. Cantabrian holm oaks grow in the area; from the summit, views stretch across the districts, meadows and marshland of Busturia. The vista offers a different way to experience the surroundings than trails through the forest, along old routes or to archaeological sites.
Landscapes and hiking trails
A hiking trail from San BartolomĂ© and Axpe follows remote paths and passes through lush riparian forest to the meadows on the slopes of Monte Sollube, continuing on to the Roman necropolis of Tribisburu. Here, the forest and the archaeological destination are both part of the route. The Las umbrĂas laderas de Busturia route also starts in San BartolomĂ© and Axpe, passing through the wooded slopes of Bistalegre and Arribieta and by well-preserved streams and old paved paths. Both descriptions name the same starting points, but emphasize different things: one route includes Sollube and Tribisburu, while the other is defined by its slopes, streams and paved paths.
The old Camino Real offers another route. One trail starts in Axpe and follows a paved section of this former connection on the way to Sukarrieta. The Camino Real linked Gernika and Bermeo through Busturia. This historic route can therefore be distinguished from the forest and hillside landscapes of the other routes described. Check local conditions before setting out on a hike.
History and wine
In Axpe, an outdoor exhibition commemorates the experiences of Busturia residents who were illegally shot between 1936 and 1937. It offers a historical focus distinct from the landscapes and archaeological destinations along the trails. As you explore Busturi-Axpe, you can also include a place of remembrance in Axpe alongside your interest in nature and hiking.
Txakoli Amunategi is also part of local history: the wine comes from the family farm of the same name and belongs to the Bizkaiko Txakolina designation of origin. Written records date the wine to 1812; the winery building was constructed in 1849. The two dates refer to different things: 1812 to the records about the wine, and 1849 to the construction of the building. Wine and hiking trails thus offer different themes to explore on a trip, without prescribing a particular itinerary for your stay.
Getting there and finding accommodation
Bus and rail connections are available to help you get around by public transport. Bizkaibus line A3515 connects Bilbao, Amorebieta-Etxano, Gernika-Lumo and Bermeo, with stops in San Kristobal, San Bartolomé and Axpe. Euskotren connects Busturia by rail with Bilbao, Gernika, Amorebieta and Bermeo. Check the current bus route and train timetable before your trip so you can plan for your specific travel day.
When looking for a hotel, you can start by deciding which themes matter most for your stay: hiking trails and landscapes, the Camino Real and local history, or Txakoli Amunategi. The bus and rail connections mentioned above provide practical starting points for planning your journey; while you are there, it is worth checking the latest routes and timetables.
