When planning your trip to Altamira-San Kristobal, you can focus on different aspects: the wetlands and their birdlife, or the San Kristobal Hermitage, its history and feast day. There are also different ways to explore the nature theme: landforms, focused birdwatching and ecological relationships. So when choosing a focus, it matters whether you are most interested in the landscape, birdlife or habitats.
Wetlands and Birdlife
From Arenal de San Kristobal, the influence of the tides and river, as well as the transitions between sandy and muddy areas of the wetlands, are easy to see. This brings the nature of the wetland into focus alongside its wildlife. The artificial sandy shore of San Kristobal in Busturia is designated a ZEPA, a special protection area for birds. Landscape observation and the protected-area designation highlight two different aspects of this natural environment: visible transitions in the terrain and the formal status of a named shore.
The San CristĂłbal birdwatching point is in the San CristĂłbal neighbourhood of Busturia. It is a public observation hide for focused observation of the wetlands and birds. Great Curlews, Grey Herons, Little Egrets, geese and various ducks can often be seen at Arenal de San Kristobal. The hide is intended for focused observation, while the Arenal is associated with specific groups of birds commonly seen there.
The ecological trail through the San CristĂłbal wetlands starts and ends in the San CristĂłbal wetlands. It introduces visitors to various biocoenoses and biotopes of the Urdaibai wetlands. Biocoenoses are communities of living organisms; biotopes are the habitats in which these communities occur. The terms complement each other but refer to different levels of wetland ecology. Compared with focused birdwatching, the trail places greater emphasis on ecological relationships.
Hermitage and Feast Day
The San Kristobal Hermitage is beside the road leading to the San Kristobal neighbourhood and the railway station. A hermitage named San Nicolás or San Kristobal already existed at the beginning of the 17th century.
The feast day of the San Kristobal Hermitage is 10 July; it includes a sung Mass and a popular festival. The date brings together a religious occasion and a community celebration. If you would like to include the feast day in your travel plans, check the dates for the year you intend to visit.
