In the present-day town centre of Zambrana, in Ocio and in Berganzo, there are different cultural landmarks within the municipality. Churches and fortified sites shape its cultural heritage; the village festival and Remember de Zambrana add two events that recur every year. For planning, the precise location and the calendar are particularly important: they show whether a visit should focus more on architectural history or on a particular festival.

Castles in the Municipality

Zambrana is known for its medieval fortified heritage and is therefore described as a municipality of castles. The Castillo de Portilla, known in Basque as Zabaletako Gaztelua, is located within the municipality: it was built in the 11th century. The Castillo de Lanos, by contrast, is in Ocio, which belongs to the municipality of Zambrana in the province of Álava. It stands on a high rocky ridge.

The two castles have different points of interest: the 11th century is a specific historical reference point for Castillo de Portilla, while Castillo de Lanos is notable for its location on the rocky ridge near Ocio. The recommended walking route from Ocio to Castillo de Lanos is about 900 metres long. This approximate distance can be factored into your personal day plan.

Churches, Town Centre and Local Art

The Church of Santa Lucía is located in the centre of Zambrana’s present-day town centre. It was built in the 16th century as a chapel and was extended after it was granted parish church status in 1621. The Zambrana washhouse is located at the exit from the town towards Portilla. These are two distinct local landmarks: the church in the centre of the present-day town centre and the washhouse at the exit towards Portilla.

In Berganzo, also within the municipality, the parish church of San Miguel houses an altarpiece in the Romanesque Revival style. At Santa Lucía, the focus is on its history as a chapel and its later extension; at San Miguel, it is the altarpiece. The Crismón de Zambrana is considered one of the rare Romanesque chrismons in the Álava area; according to the description, there are only four examples in the region in total.

Festivals and Practical Information

The Zambrana village festival is held every year on the last weekend of July. Remember de Zambrana takes place every year on the third Saturday in September. These recurring events offer two different dates to consider when planning your trip. If you would like to attend one of the festivals, check the exact event date in advance.

A municipal notice dated 4 December 2025 mentions a motorhome service area next to the municipal pelota court and the mill park. Check whether the area is operational before travelling.
