A summit view reaching as far as the Cantabrian Sea, waterfalls amid dense vegetation and a monument more than 5,000 years old: Villayón brings together opportunities to discover nature and culture in many different ways. Pico Villayón is in the main town and stands 521 metres high. From its summit, the panoramic view stretches as far as the coast.

Waterfalls and landscapes

At the Cascadas de Oneta, three waterfalls cascade down over a short stretch. They flow year-round and lie amid dense vegetation on the Río Oneta near the village of Oneta. Remains of watermills can be seen along the cascades—a reminder that the landscape and its former uses can be considered together here.

Pozo Mouro offers a different kind of landscape, shaped by waterfalls, lush vegetation and native trees. Nearby, there is also an old mill and a waterfall surrounded by several rocks. So, when comparing the waterfalls in Villayón, you will encounter both a succession of cascades and individual waterfalls in a wooded, rocky setting.

Cascada de Méxica drops ten metres in a horsetail shape. A local legend is associated with it: beneath the cave, there was said to be a golden castle where a Moorish king lived with his two enchanted, golden-haired daughters. This story is part of the area's cultural heritage and sits alongside the factual description of the waterfall.

Trails, elevations and nature experiences

Sierra de Carondio is a scenic attraction in Villayón and is well suited to outdoor activities. The Villayón–Oneta cycling route is also in the Parque Histórico del Navia. A trail with a very different level of difficulty leads from Barandón to Dolmen de Barandón: it is considered challenging and follows livestock tracks as well as crossing streams. Trail conditions can change, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Dolmen de Barandón is also known as Dolmen de Entrerríos and Llastra da Filadoira. This megalithic monument, more than 5,000 years old, adds an archaeological dimension to a region whose appeal also lies in its landscapes. You can tailor your visit to your interests—whether a viewpoint, nature or evidence of a distant past—without needing to connect these discoveries into a fixed route.

Culture among churches and protected landscapes

Iglesia de Arbón dates from the late 17th century. Its side chapel dates back to the 15th to 16th century and is decorated with murals. At Área Recreativa de Las Virtudes, you can see a monolith dedicated to emigrants and an original hermitage that was remodelled in 1950. These two places show different facets of cultural heritage: religious architecture and a tribute to emigration.

Centro de Interpretación de los Paisajes Protegidos de Montaña explains the significance of the protected landscape of Sierras de Carondio y Valledor, along with its cultural, archaeological, ethnographic and natural resources. Check access details before your visit. If you are interested in understanding the landscape, this offers a thematic perspective that brings nature and human history together.

Water sports and practical information

Water also offers opportunities for activities: canoeing and rowing are available or practised at Campo de Remo in Arbón. Embalse de Arbón is suitable for canoeing, rowing and sailing. Local operating conditions may vary; check which facilities are currently available in advance. This helps you plan around your chosen activity rather than assuming a particular service will be available.

Oficina de Turismo de Villayón is located at Calle Oneta, s/n, 33717 Villayón, Asturias. As visitor information may change, it is best to confirm the details before travelling. You can decide which discoveries will shape your stay according to your own preferences.
