Those wishing to explore Lugones on foot can choose between a circular trail through La Cebera and a linear trail along the Nora. The two routes differ considerably in duration, with the forest, riverbanks and cultural heritage each offering a different focus. There are also festivals, a museum and insights into cider-making.
Forest or river trail: two time options
The Senda Verde La Cebera is a 5 km circular trail with a walking time of about two hours and a low difficulty level. It starts in Lugones, either at the SI-1 or at the RENFE station. The Senda Lugones-Parque Principado, by contrast, is a 3.3 km linear trail; it takes about 30 minutes and is also rated as low difficulty. This gives you a longer walk and a considerably shorter route as two different options to fit your schedule. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
The Senda Verde runs through a park covering about 300,000 square metres, with around 2,000 plant species. La Cebera, also known as El Carbayu, is a century-old forest with abundant birdlife and diverse flora. Its landscape features also include a large lagoon with a viewpoint. The trail therefore combines a defined walking distance with opportunities to discover the area's plant and animal life.
The Senda Lugones-Parque Principado follows the banks of the Nora through riverside vegetation where mallards and common moorhens can be spotted. One of the trail's points of interest is the Puente Vieyu de Lugones. The bridge crosses the Nora and connects Siero and Oviedo. It has been listed in the Inventario del Patrimonio Cultural del Principado de Asturias since 30 May 2011, in recognition of its historical and architectural value.
La Cebera has road access, parking, a children's play area, picnic tables and access for coaches. If any of these facilities are essential to your visit, check their current status locally. The municipal outdoor swimming pool is also in the La Cebera recreation area. It is seasonal, and opening arrangements may vary, so it is a good idea to check the current hours before planning a visit.
Festivals, museum and cider in Lugones
The Muestra de Teatro de Lugones has been held without interruption since its first edition in August 1987. It marks the start of the Santa Isabel patron saint festivities and takes place in the last week of August; dates and programmes may change from year to year. The Fiestas de Santa Isabel were established by a group of women and have a history spanning more than a century. The Fiestas de El Carbayu also combine religious tradition with gastronomy, music and activities for all age groups. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the relevant dates.
The Museo de la Romería uses a large model to recreate the Nuestra Señora del Buen Suceso festival at El Carbayu in Lugones as it looked in 1952. The scene features up to 300 figures. Visitors can watch the depicted attractions in operation and listen to the orchestras' music. General visits are offered on Thursdays and Fridays from 18:00 to 20:00; admission is free. Opening hours and prices may vary by season. Check the current details before your visit.
Cider-making is another local feature: Lagar Sidra Fran was founded by Francisco Villanueva Suárez in 1918 and offers tours of its own cider presses. Confirm your visit in advance. Sidra Fran produces the natural ciders Ramos del Valle, with the protected designation of origin DOP Sidra de Asturias, and Sidra Fran; product details may change. A weekly market is held in Lugones on Fridays. As market dates may change, it is worth confirming them if a visit is part of your plans.
