At Playa La Franca, the coastline and river mouth meet: the beach lies at the mouth of the Cabra River and forms the coastal boundary between Llanes and Ribadedeva. At low tide, it connects with the coves of El Oso, El Viveru and Regorgueru. If you would like to include these coves in your coastal plans, time your visit according to the tide and check the tide level in advance. This lets you take tidal conditions into account when choosing when to visit the beach.
Coast and tides
Playa La Franca has vehicle access, as well as food and drink options, showers, toilets, parking and a lifeguard service. Various facilities are therefore available for visitors to the beach, while access to the three coves depends on low tide. The coast can thus be experienced both through the practical facilities and through the changing tides. If the coves are your main focus, the tide is a different planning consideration from the facilities available at the beach.
Routes with different focuses
The Camino de Santiago stage from Bustio to Vidiago follows the N-634 to La Franca. Another route reference is the Bustio–La Franca section of the GR AS-19, known internationally as the E-9. It is a hiking and mountain-biking route that follows local roads and trails through woodland and green, livestock-grazed meadows to La Franca. The stage descriptions have different endpoints: the Camino de Santiago route described continues to Vidiago, while the stated GR AS-19 section connects Bustio with La Franca.
For a longer coastal route, the coastal path from Bustio to Pendueles passes partly through the RĂa de Ribadesella – RĂa de Tinamayor ZEC and ZEPA protected area. A cycling route from Bustio to Ribadesella is also described: it follows the former N-634, and Playa de La Franca is among the fine-sand beaches highlighted along the way. These offer different perspectives on routes through the coastal region. Which one interests you depends on whether you are considering a Camino de Santiago stage, the designated section of the GR AS-19, or a coastal or cycling tour.
By the Cabra River: trail and history of the mills
The Ruta de los molinos del rĂo Cabra follows the river for around 4.5 km through meadows and riverside woodland. The route therefore focuses on the river and its landscape. Some of the mills along the way are largely in ruins, so take care when visiting. The historical context adds to this practical guidance: the mills on the Cabra River served the residents of Valle Oscuru on both sides of Ribadedeva and Llanes. The river, the mills and the route through meadows and riverside woodland together offer a view of the landscape and how it was used in the past.
