In Pravia, significant architectural history and vibrant traditions meet a landscape of open valleys and hills. You can choose different focuses for your trip: the collegiate church and historic routes, a visit to the Aula Museo, the weekly market or a walk along the Ruta de Los Marineros. This lets you discover Pravia through specific places and dates, without requiring culture and landscape to be experienced in the same way.
Heritage between the collegiate church and school museum
The Colegiata de Santa MarĂa la Mayor was commissioned in 1715 by Fernando Ignacio Arango Queipo, the Bishop of Tuy, as part of a Baroque ensemble. The church of San Juan ApĂłstol y Evangelista in Santianes de Pravia offers a different architectural focus: it is the oldest surviving example of pre-Romanesque Asturian architecture. Three historic routes from Pravia have also been included in the heritage inventory—as pilgrimage routes to Santiago and in the category of archaeological sites.
The Aula Museo Alberto MartĂnez focuses on more recent everyday history. In the former National Schools of Arango, classrooms from the 1930s and 1940s have been faithfully recreated. Much of the furniture and school materials are original from that period. Plan your visit in advance, as bookings are required; special rules apply to visits. This sets the museum apart from the buildings and routes listed in the heritage inventory: here, the focus is on classrooms and their furnishings.
River landscape and walking routes
The waterways of Pravia and their tributaries, including the AranguĂn, have shaped open valleys and gentle hills that do not exceed 700 metres. If you want to explore the landscape on foot, the Ruta de senderismo de Los Marineros is an 8.4-kilometre circular walking route. The Mirador de El Cueto, a viewpoint above the town of Pravia, can also be reached on foot via the Ruta de Los Marineros. The route’s length and circular shape describe the route, not the time required or its level of difficulty.
The rivers are also associated with recreational fishing: they contain some of Asturias’s most renowned salmon pools, and recreational fishing is one of the municipality’s main attractions. If you plan to spend time fishing, check the regulations and access conditions separately. The Molinos de La Veiga offer another connection to water power. They have been operating since 1890 and continue to mill using traditional methods powered by water. Contact them in advance before visiting.
El RincĂłn de las Aves is a visitor centre with a large garden where more than 400 plant varieties grow. Check the current opening arrangements before your visit. It offers another botanical point of interest alongside the circular route and the mills.
Market and recurring traditions
The Mercado Tradicional de Pravia takes place every Thursday throughout the year, including public holidays, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. It offers produce from the region’s vegetable gardens and other quality goods. As market hours may change, check the schedule before your visit. The market is a specific weekly event, while the XiringĂĽelu-RomerĂa takes place on an annual summer date.
The XiringĂĽelu-RomerĂa takes place every summer at Prao SalcĂ©u on the first Sunday in August after the first Thursday in August. Check the annual programme before your trip. For Corpus Christi, the streets of Pravia are decorated with floral and ornamental carpets; the arrangements can vary from year to year. Together with the year-round cultural sites and the river landscape, these traditions offer different reasons to weigh up your travel dates and interests.
