At the Mirador de Oceño, the view stretches across the Cares Valley. The viewpoint is on the road that climbs from Mildón to Oceño. This combination of valley views and a mountain road is a distinctive introduction to Peñamellera Alta. Further explorations take in architectural history, prehistoric animal depictions and trails in the Sierra del Cuera.

Places and access roads

The AS-114 connects Arenas de Cabrales with Panes. The road to Oceño branches off from this road at Mildón. You can reach Alles from the AS-114 by taking the turn-off at Niserias and then passing through Besnes. Check road conditions and signs before setting off, as they may change. For Oceño, the approach via Mildón and the uphill road are useful for finding your way locally.

Architectural history and cave art

In Alles, in the El Pedrosu neighbourhood, stands the Capilla de la Reina de los Ángeles. It is part of a 17th-century palatial complex in the Montañes style. The complex was built on the site of an older manor house that the family had occupied since the late Middle Ages. The Iglesia de San Pedro in Alles marks a different period: its Baroque church was completed in 1787.

Ruenes and Llonín also offer their own landmarks in architectural history. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Ruenes dates from the 16th century, while the Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián in Llonín dates from the 15th century. Outside Alles are the remains of San Pedro de Plecín, a late Romanesque church dating from between the 11th and 13th centuries. It was built over an earlier pre-Romanesque church. Archaeological remains of a large medieval necropolis were also found beneath the complex.

The painted and engraved animal depictions in the Cueva de Llonín are assigned to five phases, from the Gravettian to the Magdalenian. The Puente La Vidre in Trescares offers another glimpse of the built heritage: the medieval bridge has a single arch, and its origins may date back to Roman times.

The Cuera and mountain trails

The southern side of the Sierra del Cuera, a protected landscape, is accessible from Alles. At 1,315 metres, Pico Turbina is the highest point in the range. The route to its summit starts at Collado La Cruz, at kilometre 6.5 of the AS-345 between Arangas and Rozagás.

The Ruta Pica Peñamellera starts and ends in Mier. From the summit, 360-degree views take in Peñamellera Alta, the nearby valleys, and the eastern and central massifs of the Picos de Europa. The final section is also important when assessing the hike: it crosses a rocky, exposed climbing passage recommended only for people with mountain experience.

On 28 August 2025, the Asturian regional government announced nine main stages of the Camín de los Santuarios, covering a total of 174 kilometres on foot and 175 kilometres by bicycle. A regional government report dated the same day describes improvements to the route, additional signage and safety measures, as well as the restoration of several sections. Measures also affected the municipality of Peñamellera Alta. Check conditions again before your trip.

Bees, honey and local cuisine

The publicly accessible Aula de la Miel in Alles introduces visitors to the lives of bees, the work of beekeepers, and honey and honey-based cuisine. The guided tour includes a tasting of maistortos with various types of honey, water and honey liqueur. Programme details may change; confirm them when booking. Borono, honey and cheese are other examples of local cuisine.

Niserias is noted for a clear-water salmon fishing area. Fishing regulations and access may change; check them before visiting to fish. Alongside churches, cave art and mountain hikes, beekeeping and local cuisine offer other interests to explore.
