River corridor and mountain landscape

Parres connects the Sella river corridor with the mountain landscape of the Sierra del Sueve. At the Emilio Llamedo Bridge, the river itself is part of the view: the bridge has a cantilevered viewing point over the Sella. Its design gives pedestrians greater prominence and extends the urban fabric of Arriondas. Structural details may change over time. The protected landscape of the Sierra del Sueve includes the Sierra del Sueve SAC (ES1200043). Picu Pienzu is the highest point in the Sierra; the Mirador del Fitu offers views of the Picos de Europa.

The Camín de la Reina: route and history

The Camín de la Reina is 12.1 kilometres long and is classified as an easy hiking route. The path partly follows an ancient Roman road built by Legio VII under Emperor Galba in 67. Its present-day name dates back to Isabel II’s journey to Covadonga in the summer of 1858. The two dates refer to different things: the Roman road points to older infrastructure, while the route’s name refers to a later travel story. The Camín also partly passes through the Natura 2000 site Río Sella SAC.

Churches and other routes

The history of construction can also be traced through specific features. The Church of San Martín de Escoto in Llames has medieval origins and consists of a single-nave building with a square chancel. The simple Chapel of San Lorenzo in Romiyu lies along the Camín de la Reina. Another route follows the GR108: after crossing a bridge over the Piloña River, it passes the Church of Santa María.

Cycling route and Fiesta del Bollu

In Parres, the cycling route from Oviedo to Cangas de Onís follows the road from Arenes and climbs there over a distance of about three kilometres. Check road conditions before setting off. For the Camín, the distance and difficulty rating are specified; for the cycling route, the road and approximate climb are given. This can help you choose between a hiking trail and a cycling route.

The Fiesta del Bollu is celebrated in Arriondas and is also known as La Peruyal. The festival is classified as a Festival of Tourist Interest of the Principality of Asturias and has been held since the first half of the 20th century. The historic quarter of La Peruyal is the centre of the celebrations. The dual name refers to two things: the festival is also called La Peruyal, while the historic quarter of La Peruyal is its centre. Dates and programme may vary from one edition to the next. If you are planning your visit around the festival, check both before your trip.
