Noreña combines a layered architectural history with gastronomic festive traditions. This offers two distinct focuses for planning your trip: historic architecture and events centred on local specialities. The dates that work for a stay depend on the year, as the festival dates vary.

Church Architecture and Building History

The Iglesia de Santa María de Noreña was built on the site of an earlier Romanesque church. Construction of the present church began in the last third of the 16th century. Inside, three naves of equal height divide the space; large arcades separate them, and a variety of ribbed vaults cover them. The main altarpiece also combines art-historical influences: it is predominantly Renaissance in style, with some Mannerist elements. The Renaissance therefore defines the altarpiece, while Mannerism appears in selected details.

Another chapter in the town’s church-building history is the Capilla de la Soledad / Ecce-Homo. Its barrel vault and the portico on the main façade are distinctive architectural features. The Baroque altarpiece contains an image of Ecce Homo by the Sevillian sculptor Gregorio Galán del Amo. The chapel’s history spans several changes: after it was destroyed in a fire in 1901, it was rebuilt in 1903 and remodelled in 1953 to resemble Asturian rural chapels.

The Palacio del Rebollín was built in several phases between the 16th and 18th centuries. The coats of arms of the Argüelles and Argüelles-Quirós families can be seen on its main façade. The Torre del Reloj served a different historic function: it was a public clock, a place from which residents were summoned, and a prison. These buildings illustrate different aspects of the town’s history, from construction in several phases to former public functions.

The Quiosco de la Música also brings together architectural and musical history. The municipal band was founded in 1891; the bandstand was designed in 1892. Its octagonal structure is made of iron and wood. A dome covered with zinc shingles, along with floral and musical ornaments, defines its design. Visitors interested in architecture will find a different scale and style here than at the churches and the Palacio del Rebollín.

Fabada, Sabadiego and Festival Dates

The Fábrica La Luz is an emblematic building dating from 1913. It was the first factory in Noreña to use modern machinery to make cured meats. It was also the first factory in the world to can Asturian Fabada. Sabadiego is another part of the local food culture: this sausage is made with blood, lean meat and onions. The Orden del Sabadiego helps organise the gastronomic festivities celebrating this product.

In spring, the Fiesta del Picadillo y el Sabadiego takes place at the same time as San Marcos. It is recognised as a festival of tourist interest by the Principality of Asturias; the exact date changes from year to year. During the Fiesta de San Marcos, local restaurateurs offer free tastings of these specialities. If you want to plan your stay around this festival, check the date for the relevant year.

Another gastronomic event celebrates Callos. It has been held for more than 40 years and attracts thousands of visitors. Its annual date falls around the time of Spain’s Constitution Day. There is also an event during the annual Ecce-Homo festivities at which pork is distributed free of charge to residents and visitors. These culinary occasions differ both in their specialities and in when they take place.

Planning Your Travel Focus and Accommodation

When choosing your travel dates, it helps to consider the town’s architectural history and festive traditions as separate focuses: the historic buildings provide architectural points of interest, while gastronomic events are tied to specific dates. Noreña is also connected to the Camino de Santiago via the coastal route. If you are planning a trip around one of the recurring festivities, check the date for that year and your accommodation’s availability before booking.
