Arnao combines an unusual mining heritage with a coastline whose natural features are partly shaped by the tides. For planning purposes, it is important to know that the Museo de la Mina de Arnao remains closed for construction work until further notice. Check access again before planning a visit.
A Mine with a Unique History
The Arnao coal mine is the oldest hard-coal mining site on the Iberian Peninsula. Arnao is also home to Europe’s only underwater mine. Asturias’ oldest vertical shaft is part of its history, too. The mine’s headframe is designated as a Cultural Heritage Site (Bien de Interés Cultural, BIC) and is associated with Asturias’ first vertical shaft to be sunk. From the 19th century to the early 20th century, it was used for mining in an underwater coal mine. This links mining history of regional importance with a specific technical landmark in Arnao.
The Museo de la Mina is housed in a restored 19th-century mining building. From 1915, the building was used as a workers’ social club and was later converted into the mine’s interpretation centre. The history of the industrial complex is presented through audiovisual materials, images and information panels. The visitor experience includes self-guided visits and guided tours. Guided tours go down the shaft and through centuries-old underground galleries, and explain their connection to the sea. Activities about the mine also introduce 19th-century historic buildings, former railway tracks, centuries-old workshops and the memories of the people who lived there. The story thus spans everything from the technical workings of the mine to the built and human traces of the industrial complex.
Coastline and Geological Features
The Senda Costa Norte runs partly through the Cabo Busto-Luanco Special Area of Conservation (SAC), part of the Natura 2000 network. If you are planning to walk the route, check current trail conditions beforehand. At Playa de Arnao, La Hollina forms a natural pool at low tide, making the tide level a specific factor in deciding when to visit. The Arnao platform adds a geological feature to the coastline: fossil coral formations create a reef there. If you are planning a visit to La Hollina, keep low tide in mind; the platform, meanwhile, showcases Arnao’s fossil reef structure.
Other Traces of Industry
The Eleonore locomotive can also be seen in Arnao. It was used to transport ore from Arnao to San Juan de Nieva. If you are planning specifically to see the locomotive, check how it is currently displayed before your trip. Another historic trace is linked to the railway: remains of the line described as Spain’s first railway were found in Arnao. The locomotive and the railway remains point to different aspects of transport history; the former railway tracks and workshops also broaden the picture to include working life around the mine.
