Argame brings together a protected ethnographic landmark, historic buildings and the route of a King's Way. Nearby, the Parteayer recreation area adds cultural and scenic points of interest. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth distinguishing between the dated buildings, the historic route and a visit to the recreation area.
Hórreo and historic buildings
The hórreo with carved doors in Argame is one of Asturias's protected examples of ethnographic heritage; it has received particular recognition for its unique features. This brings together a specific detail—the carvings on the doors—and the cultural classification of the building.
The historical dates also highlight different periods. In the 11th century, the Villa de Argame was donated to the Church of Oviedo by Mumma Donna, the widow of Count Gundemaro Pinioliz; further donations followed in the decades afterwards. The parish church of San Miguel in Argame dates to the 12th century and is listed in the Asturian register of architectural heritage. A later landmark is the Casona de los Moutas: the municipal history page, drawing on the Gran Atlas del Principado de Asturias, dates it to the 18th century. The timeline therefore spans the 11th-century donations, the 12th-century church and the 18th-century Casona.
The historic King's Way near Argame
A historic King's Way ran from Oviedo via Barco de Soto in the municipality of Ribera de Arriba towards the lands of León. Near Argame, it followed the left bank of the Río Caudal through the broad Vega de Argame, entered the Sidrán gorge and reached Santa Eulalia. The route can thus be understood at two geographical levels: as a link from Oviedo towards the lands of León, and through its specific course along the riverbank, across the Vega and into the gorge near Argame. The wider context and the local landscape complement each other, without reducing the historical route details to a single attraction.
Mill and recreation area
The Molino de Aladino Menéndez is located near Argame. It is considered exceptionally well preserved, with its machinery kept in perfect condition inside the building. The mill adds a different cultural and historical focus: alongside the church and the Casona, attention here turns to the mill building and its machinery.
The Parteayer recreation area near Argame has barbecue spots, tables, a fountain, and children's play and sports facilities. Parteayer thus complements the historic points of interest with a place for relaxation and a range of activities. As individual facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.
