Despite extensive alterations, the Iglesia de los Remedios retains its original portal and bell gable. A century-old yew tree stands right next to the church. Carrio thus offers a tangible glimpse into its architectural history; a guided walk exploring its industrial heritage and a mountain bike flow trail provide different options for planning your trip.

Church and Historic Village Architecture

The Iglesia de los Remedios in Carrio was formerly known as Santa MarĂa de Rimori and was a chapel until the mid-18th century. Despite extensive alterations, its original portal and bell gable have survived. The century-old yew tree stands immediately next to the church. The village streets also feature old stone houses with traditional arcaded walkways; some hĂłrreos are several centuries old. Together, an individual religious building, a tree right beside it and various elements of traditional village architecture offer different perspectives on the history of the place.

Mining History and Cultural Heritage

The Escuelas de Carrio in Laviana are also part of the history of mining: they were endowed by Joaquín Velasco, a mining engineer at Coto Musel. The schools are among the 120 sites of cultural and historical interest in Asturias. Their founder’s professional background gives the history of the school a direct connection to mining. Pozo Carrio–Barredos offers a different perspective: it is an element of the industrial heritage in Laviana and San Martín del Rey Aurelio. These examples therefore differ both in type and in their geographical location.

Guided Walk and Mountain Bike Flow Trail

A walk exploring Laviana’s industrial heritage is listed in the municipal programme of guided routes. It runs from Carrio to Los Cuarteles; CIDAN in Pola de Laviana is listed as the starting point. The route is eight kilometres long and is rated moderate to easy. Contact the municipality for information about upcoming departures. Its length and difficulty provide two concrete points of reference for working this guided walk into your plans.

The Senderos del Carbón Flow Trail is geared towards a different activity: this circular route was designed specifically for mountain bikes and includes a 3.5-kilometre descent. It runs down the slopes of Monte Carrio; numerous bends, jumps, rollers and drops shape the route. The trail is considered Spain’s first flow trail to be homologated in accordance with IMBA standards. It can be muddy in winter, while vegetation is lush in summer; trail conditions can vary with the seasons. Unlike the guided walk, this route is specifically designed for mountain bikes and focuses on its technical features.

Festivities and Accommodation

The patronal feast of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios in Carrio takes place on 8 September; programme details may vary from year to year. In 2023, the programme included a procession with bagpipes and drum, a mass in the church of Carrio and the Puya l’ramu. If you would like to plan your stay around the feast day, check the dates and programme for the relevant year.

El Capricho de Carrio is a rural apartment establishment at Carrio 36. It comprises three independent apartments with a total capacity of 16, including six extra places, and is open year-round. Check current availability directly with the establishment. For directions, a route description published in 2022 gives directions to a turn-off from the AS-17. The village’s narrow, densely built-up streets can be difficult to navigate in four-wheeled vehicles. Check current road conditions and any restrictions before setting out.
