In Sama, Langreo’s mining and industrial character can be seen in its buildings, historic details and walking routes. Two routes are particularly easy to distinguish when planning your visit: a linear town walk of about an hour and a four-kilometre riverside path that is completely flat. There are also notable buildings from different periods, with details ranging from a Neo-Gothic church to railway and industrial architecture.

Mining History and Industrial Development

The Bocamina de Pozo Modesta in Sama is listed in Asturias’s inventory of industrial heritage, with integral protection. Another testament to the area’s industrial history is the Puente nuevo de Sama: the 63-metre-long iron bridge replaced a wooden bridge that was used to transport coal. Until the 1960s, it was the only link between Sama and La Felguera. Its history thus connects bridge construction with the transport that played a role in local industry.

Churches, Housing and Architecture

The Iglesia de Santiago de Sama is a large Neo-Gothic church. Its predecessor, built in the 19th century, was destroyed during the October Revolution of 1934; the church was rebuilt after the end of the Spanish Civil War. An older detail can be found in the bell tower on the right-hand side: it bears engravings from 1630 that came from the Ermita del Carbayu. The rebuilding and the engravings point to different historical layers of the same building.

The Casa sindical en Sama de Langreo was built in 1950. It is a work by the Hermanos Somolinos and belongs to the Modern Movement in architecture. The Viviendas para ferroviarios del Ferrocarril de Langreo en Sama show another side of industrial history: they were built in the 1950s on behalf of the Ferrocarril de Langreo, with Carlos Roa involved in the project. Their architectural details include pinnacles and Ionic capitals. The housing also highlights the connection between the railway company, residential construction and architecture.

The Estación de FEVE de Sama de Langreo dates from 1907 and is located in the parish of La Felguera. Its traditional, elaborate design features walls made of dressed natural stone blocks. The Cine Felgueroso offers a different architectural accent: the elliptical building was designed by architect Juan José Suárez and is one of the few examples of a German architectural movement of the 1950s. Following its renovation and reopening in 2007, it currently serves as an audiovisual centre. Check the programme before your visit.

Two Walking Routes, Two Scales

The Ruta urbana por Sama de Langreo is a two-kilometre linear town walk that takes about an hour. It leads through Sama, a place with a strong mining and industrial character. At four kilometres, the Paseo Fluvial junto al río Nalón is twice as long and completely flat. It runs between Sama and Ciaño and ends next to the MUMI mining museum in the neighbouring municipality of San Martín del Rey Aurelio. The stated distances and durations make it easy to distinguish between a shorter walk through Sama and a longer route along the river.

Parque Dorado and Getting There

Parque Dorado is in the centre of Sama and was laid out from 1902 onwards. The park has a mini-golf course, a sports field, table tennis tables and padel courts. Check the condition of the facilities on site before using them.

A bus route connects Sama de Langreo with Pola de Siero; there is also a connection between Langreo and Carbayín Alto. Check current services and timetables before your trip. This will help you coordinate your journey with your planned visits in Sama, without assuming an unspecified walking time for the routes mentioned.
