Playa de Bañugues: Beach and Bay

Playa de Bañugues is a quiet beach with golden sand in a rural setting. Its bay has very little wave activity; natural pools form at low tide. The beach is suitable for swimming and recreational fishing. The beach is part of the protected landscape of Cabo Peñas.

The beach is easy to reach on foot or by car, and parking is available. Seasonal lifeguard services, showers, toilets and places to eat are available at the beach. Facilities may vary by season, so check which services are available for your dates before visiting.

Coastal Trails and Landscape

The coastal trail from Luanco to Verdicio reaches Bañugues and continues from there towards the old Llumeres mine. The section near Llumeres has a viewpoint overlooking the former ore-loading port and its industrial surroundings. As conditions on the route and at the viewpoint may change, check them before setting out.

The “Bañugues a Ferrero” route starts at the Área recreativa de Bañugues near the beach of the same name and follows the pavement of the GO-1 road. From there, it passes through small settlements, livestock farms and meadows in the parish of Bañugues to El Monte; the route also leads to a small recreation area at the foot of a lighthouse. The routes offer different perspectives: the coastal trail focuses on industrial heritage, while Bañugues a Ferrero passes through the rural parish.

Mining and History

The Llumeres mines in the parish of San Nicolás de Bañugues were the most important iron ore mine in Asturias in the 19th and 20th centuries; the mine closed in 1967. The former warehouse, washing and office building, engine house, ore-classification building, mine entrance area, loading port and bakery are all still part of the historic mining complex.

A local visitor route through Cabo Peñas takes you to the 18th-century Casa-Capilla de los González Llanos in Bañugues; check the visitor programme in advance. The visitor programme may change. A Roman-era villa has also been identified in Bañugues. The Traslaiglesia site is among the most recent archaeological finds associated with Bañugues.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The Festival del Oricio in Bañugues features tastings and traditional cuisine centred on oricio. The date varies; if you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact dates.

El Carmen de Bañugues takes place on the last weekend of September, on Saturday and Sunday. It includes a solemn Mass and a procession; the programme may vary from year to year.

The Sacramental de Bañugues is an Asturian Romería featuring children’s activities, a parade of floats, a dance event and fireworks. The exact dates may vary from year to year. San Nicolás in Bañugues is celebrated on 6 December with a solemn Mass and a procession; the programme for this festival may also vary from year to year.
