With its pilgrimage history, historic architecture and coastal scenery, Cartavio offers several specific points of interest for a stay. Casa de Castro is an Asturian manor house dating from the late 19th century in Cartavio. The estate includes a walled garden, an Asturian hórreo more than a hundred years old, and a chapel that has been included in the heritage inventory. Facilities and visitor access depend on the estate’s current operations.

Pilgrimage History and Architecture

On the Camino through Cartavio, the parish church of Santa María is particularly notable. It is considered a witness to the centuries-old pilgrimage route. Near the church, a tombstone from the 10th century recalls the great age of this place; the church building also features a circular openwork window from the Romanesque period. At Santa María, pilgrimage tradition, a historic testament near the church and an architectural detail can all be found side by side.

Routes with Different Highlights

The Camino del Norte, a historic route to Santiago, passes through Coaña and continues to Cartavio after El Esteler. The Senda Costera Ortiguera-Viavélez E-9 also passes through Cartavio. It is classified as an easy route and is suitable for hiking and mountain biking. The routes offer different points of reference for planning: for the Camino, these are its historic connection to Santiago and its course via Coaña and El Esteler; for the E-9, its difficulty level and permitted activities are useful points of comparison. Check route conditions before setting out.

Views and the Salías Recreation Area

The Mirador de Salías is located in Cartavio at an altitude of 470 metres. From here, there are sweeping views of the Cantabrian Sea and the cliffs on the west coast of Asturias. The viewpoint is also a waymarker on the Senda Costera GR-204. Its elevation, views and connection to the route offer different points of reference for planning a hike or a landscape-focused excursion.

The Salías recreation area in Cartavio has benches, tables, barbecue facilities, waste bins, springs, parking spaces and a small shelter from the rain. Access is via the N-634, through Cartavio towards Playa de Armazá. Check the access route and current facilities before your visit.

Beach Access and Conditions

Playa del Barco is also known as Playa de El Barco or Playa de Loza. This 200-metre-long pebble and gravel beach has moderate waves. It is considered easy to reach on foot, and it is also possible to drive there. Check access and safety conditions before swimming.

The path to Playa de Armazá starts in Cartavio. You can drive as far as Cartavio, then continue on foot. The practical difference between the two beach access routes is that at Armazá you must continue on foot from Cartavio, whereas El Barco is considered easy to reach on foot and can also be reached by car. Check the condition of the path before setting out.
