The “Becharro–Villamil” route is listed as a 1.76-kilometre, one-way hike. It runs partly along a road and partly along a forest track. Take the change in surfaces into account when planning; check the condition of the forest section before setting out.

Trails around Becharro

After the N-640 viaduct, the “Camino de Castropol por la Ensenada de A Lieira” continues along a riverside path towards Castropol. Becharro, a group of houses in the parish of Piñeira, lies on this route as it descends towards the river. A municipal map of the Camino de Santiago in Tapia also shows Becharro between Piñera and Berruga.

The “BTT Tol 2018” mountain-bike route also has its own route description: it links stretches of road, forest tracks and a local PR trail before descending towards Becharro. Another description follows a downhill route to the villages of Piñera and Becharro, then returns to Tol. This provides specific information on distance and surface for planning a hike, while the cycling route is described in terms of its sections and the places it passes.

Nature and water at the Ría del Eo

The Ría del Eo in Castropol is a nature reserve in the area around Becharro. Boat trips on the estuary offer opportunities to observe flora and fauna; canoeing and kayaking are other activities on the water. Tourists can also visit the floating oyster farms in the Ría del Eo.

Other nearby nature destinations include Playa de Penarronda, designated a natural monument, as well as the Valle de Obanza and the Cascada de Cioyo. Both are highlighted as natural attractions in Castropol. The destinations mentioned range from a beach to a valley and a waterfall, while the Ría del Eo adds opportunities for nature watching and activities on the water.

History and culture nearby

The Villa de Castropol has a historic old town with notable palaces and Indiano-style architecture. Castropol’s Corpus Christi celebrations include elaborate floral carpets. Both offer a distinct cultural perspective on the area around Becharro: the architecture of the old town on the one hand, and the festive tradition on the other.

Local tradition places a bloody battle in Becharro in 1378, between supporters and opponents of the Bishop of Oviedo. A document from 1381 is cited as confirmation of this tradition. It records a peace agreement with an amnesty granted by the bishop for killings committed by both sides. Alongside this medieval account is another local tradition: Pepa de Becharro, also known as Pepa de Berbesa, was among the last recorded practitioners of traditional clothes washing.
