Perlora brings together its coastal landscape and a distinctive holiday history. Carranques and Huelgues offer different beach experiences, while the VĂa Verde del Tranqueru follows the traces of a former mining railway. The historic holiday complex, beaches and circular route offer different focuses for a stay—from cultural heritage to coastal landscapes shaped by the tides.
Perlora’s Holiday History
The Ciudad de Vacaciones de Perlora is a tourist complex in the municipality of Carreño, with a strong historical and symbolic character. The nearly 36-hectare site was designed as a holiday destination for working families from across Spain. For decades, it was a holiday destination for thousands of families from Asturias and throughout Spain. Its history links its original social purpose with its long-standing role as a travel destination. This makes the holiday complex a cultural highlight alongside the coast and beaches.
Circular Route Between Coast and Railway History
The VĂa Verde del Tranqueru is an easy 10.4-kilometre circular route with an estimated duration of three to five hours. The route starts and ends at the Ciudad de Vacaciones de Perlora and connects the complex with Xivares Beach. Along the way, sections pass through cliffs, coves and old railway tunnels. In places, the VĂa Verde follows the route of the former Carreño mining railway. The former railway tunnels and trackbed make the area’s industrial history along the coast easier to trace. The estimated duration of three to five hours makes this a several-hour outing rather than a short detour. Coastal access conditions may change seasonally or after weather events; check them before setting out.
Carranques and Huelgues: Two Beachscapes
Carranques is a 220-metre-long sandy beach with golden sand and moderate waves. Two small coves, separated by a headland, divide the beach; the surrounding area includes coves, caves and lush vegetation. The beach is in the Ciudad Residencial de Perlora and can be reached by road. Facilities include a car park, showers, toilets, sports courts, a children’s playground and barbecue areas. These facilities may vary depending on the season or municipal operating arrangements. If particular amenities are important to you, check whether they are available before your beach visit.
Huelgues offers a different coastal perspective. This sandy beach is near the Ciudad Residencial de Perlora and is easy to reach on foot or by car; a car park is available. The rocky areas have a tidal ecosystem with limpets, sea urchins, octopuses and sea anemones. When choosing a beach, you can weigh Carranques’ coves and facilities against the rocky intertidal areas at Huelgues. Visitors interested in coastal ecology will find a particular focus here in the tidal ecosystem of the rocky areas.
