Caño draws attention to two sides of the Sella: at the Salmonera de Cañu, the seasonal salmon run takes centre stage, while Stage 7 of the pilgrimage route from Cangas de Onís to Covadonga features the great river bend. These experiences differ considerably when planning a trip: wildlife viewing depends on the season and water levels, while the hike has a specified distance and one-way duration.
Salmon at the Salmonera de Cañu
The Salmonera de Cañu is a salmon barrier on the Sella in Caño. There, you can watch salmon swimming upstream to their spawning grounds. The run is seasonal; water levels also affect viewing conditions. Walkways allow you to move between the pools with due care and see salmon jumping at close range.
The Cañu station uses a historic dam built in 1928. Artificial fish ladders and pools help salmon in the Sella make their way upstream. The facility therefore offers a direct view of the salmon migration while also serving a structural purpose: the ladders and pools help fish travel upstream.
Stage 7: River Bend and Hike
Stage 7 of the pilgrimage route from Cangas de Onís to Covadonga is 14.6 km long, has a low difficulty level and takes 4 hours and 30 minutes one way. This time applies to one direction, not a round trip. If you plan to return, allow for that separately. Trail conditions can vary seasonally; check them before setting out.
The stage leads to a viewpoint overlooking the great Sella river bend in the Caño area. On a hill along the route, a short climb of 4 to 5 m offers 360-degree views of the surroundings. The short climb to the hill and the distance and walking-time figures describe different scales: a single viewpoint and the longer stage.
Walking to Caño
You can reach Caño on foot from the Roman Bridge in Cangas de Onís. The route described follows the left bank of the Sella to a footbridge that crosses the river. If you plan to take this route, check trail and crossing conditions locally. This helps ensure that the riverside route remains suitable for the conditions you encounter.
Cañeras Fishing Reserve
For the 2024 season, Cañeras was a 471 m fishing reserve on the Sella. The area follows the course of the river alongside Cañu and El Barredo. This information refers to the 2024 season; if fishing is part of your plans, check the applicable fishing regulations separately. This means two different interests coexist on the Sella: seasonal observation of the salmon run and the separate rules that apply to fishing.
