Aller is shaped by mountain peaks and forests.
Fuentes de Invierno and the Mountain Region
Fuentes de Invierno is located in Aller, in the central mountain region of Asturias. The ski area has 8.7 kilometres of ski runs, with 15 runs in total: three green, three blue, six red and three black. At the slopes, there is a sports equipment rental service, a ski school and a cafeteria-restaurant. Check current operations before travelling; services may change seasonally.
Mountain Trails and Cycling History
Aller has numerous routes for hiking, cycling, horse riding and driving. The Vía Carisa runs along the high mountain ridges of Aller and Lena. The historic Vía de La Carisa is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). Coto Bello offers a different perspective: it is considered a landmark in international cycling and is associated with legendary climbs in the history of the Vuelta a España. Both the mountain landscape and cycling history are therefore among the ways to explore Aller.
Natural Monuments and Trails to Waterfalls
The Foces de El Pino are protected as a natural monument. Another perspective is offered by the Tejo de Santibáñez de la Fuente, also a natural monument in Aller: the tree stands in the square by the church of San Juan de Riomiera, is about twelve metres tall and has a trunk circumference of 3.4 metres. The gorge and the single tree illustrate two different scales among Aller's natural monuments.
A 2.6-kilometre, very easy route leads to the Cascada de Xurbeo, starting and ending at the Murias car park. Before reaching the waterfall, the path passes through a riverside forest. Check route information locally before setting out, as details may change. Another route leads to the Foces del Río Pino and the restored Molino de Peón. The former mill was used as a trout farm.
Culture, Industrial History and Local Cuisine
The Iglesia de San Vicente de Serrapio in Serrapio is designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC); the designation dates to 15 November 1983. CIVICA has a children's area where the youngest visitors can become archaeologists for a day. Confirm access to the area and its activities in advance.
The headframe at Pozo San Fernando is a distinctive feature of industrial heritage and is located next to the recreation area there. From Orillés, Pozo can be reached exclusively on foot via the PR-AS 205 trail in about 20 minutes. The route and access are therefore quite different from the ski runs and the trails to Cascada de Xurbeo.
Panchón is a traditional dessert from Aller, made with flour from the Escanda spelt wheat variety, lard and sugar. To prepare it, the round Pancha is wrapped in cabbage leaves, covered with ash and embers, and baked. It is then crumbled and mixed with lard and sugar. For anyone interested in a place's cuisine, the preparation method is also part of what makes Panchón distinctive.
Getting Around by Train
The C8 Baíña–Col.lanzo line serves Aller with seven stations and stops; at Ablaña, it connects with the C1 commuter line. Check the current route and stops before travelling, as services and stopping patterns may change.
