At the Castro de San Chuis, traces of the past go back a long way: settlement began in the 8th century BC, and the site acquired successive defensive walls. From the mid-1st century AD, Roman activity there was linked to intensive gold mining in the surrounding deposits. Early settlement and Roman mining activity mark distinct historical periods. If you are interested in both, this contrast in time offers a special way to explore the site’s history.

Cultural heritage in Allande

Romanesque art is also represented in Allande: Santa MarĂa de CelĂłn preserves a Romanesque structure and 16th-century wall paintings. The contrast between the Romanesque building and the later-dated paintings draws attention to different historical layers.

The Torre de Valledor in San MartĂn del Valledor is an architectural complex made up of four buildings. It is listed in the Register of Cultural Assets of Special Interest of the Principality of Asturias, in the parish of Valledor in Allande. Describing it as a complex helps you understand the Torre not just as a single building, but as an ensemble.

San Emiliano is a medieval village and a historic-artistic site of scenic interest. Pola de Allande is also home to the Monument to the Asturian Emigrant, which was moved there from Puerto Rico. The change of location is itself part of the monument’s history.

The Ruta Etnográfica offers a chance to discover some of Allande’s best-preserved villages. Allande Stars offers another way to explore rural heritage, using astronomy to share it and providing innovative, educational activities about science and heritage. A village trail and an educational offering that connects science with regional heritage are two distinct options.

The Día del Emigrante was celebrated in Allande for many years, with the last Saturday in July set as its date. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check that year’s programme.

Forests, yew trees and mountain views

The Alcornocal de Boxo is a cork oak forest that the municipality describes as unique in Asturias. The Teixo de Lago is designated a Natural Monument. The Teixo de Bustantigo, meanwhile, is a thousand-year-old yew tree associated with the Celtic tradition of the yew as a sacred tree. Together, these places illustrate different connections with nature: a forest, a designated natural monument and a yew tree whose age and cultural significance take centre stage.

You can explore the Sierra de Carondio on foot. In clear weather, the view extends as far as the Cantabrian Sea. The view is therefore subject to a specific condition: only in clear weather can you see all the way to the coast.

Trails with different profiles

The easy route to Pico Panchón starts at Puerto del Palo, is 4.81 kilometres long and reaches Allande’s highest point. From there, it offers sweeping views of the mountains and valleys. On the Camino Primitivo, the stretch between Pola de Allande and Alto del Palo covers about eight kilometres, with an elevation gain of around 600 metres. This gives you a clear comparison when choosing a route: the Pico trail is shorter and rated easy, while the longer distance and approximate elevation gain are useful points of reference for the Camino section.
