El Peralejo Between Two Settlement Centers

El Peralejo is a historic settlement center in the northwestern part of the municipality of El Castillo de las Guardas. The similarly sized settlement centers of “Peralejo Bajo” and “Peralejo Alto” are 300 meters apart; El Peralejo is 10 kilometers from the municipality’s main town. These two distances refer to different scales: the layout within the settlement and its location within the municipality.

Cultural Heritage and Local Festival

The Horno de El Peralejo Barrio Alto is an ethnological heritage site in El Peralejo. This gives the history of the settlement a tangible ethnological dimension alongside its division into Alto and Bajo. A local festival is held in El Peralejo in July. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with it, check the exact event dates before making plans.

Access and Accommodation

Access to El Peralejo is via the SE-546 turnoff from the A-476. A driving route through the hamlets of El Castillo de las Guardas passes through El Peralejo, among other places; the settlement is one of the points of interest along the route. This information helps with two different planning questions: the turnoff describes how to reach the settlement, while the driving route places it within a trip through the hamlets.

The accommodation La Casita is located in Peralejo Bajo. Its location places it in one of the two settlement centers and can be helpful when finding your way around. Check the accommodation’s availability before your trip.

River Landscape and Birdlife

The area around El Peralejo also has natural attractions. The Río Agrio, also known as the Crispinejo, rises near Las Herrerías. The river passes through areas with rugged terrain and steep slopes, and often flows through deep, narrow valleys. Conditions along its steep banks support notable bird species such as the eagle owl, eagles, and black stork. The settlement’s layout and heritage site thus complement a nature-focused perspective on the river surroundings.

Hiking and Mountain Biking

The municipality currently has 70 kilometers of suitable, signposted trails. They form part of a trail network approved by the Andalusian Mountaineering, Climbing and Hiking Federation and can be used for outdoor sports activities. Conditions on individual trails may change; check the trail before setting out. The Camino de Las Cortecillas a Peroamigo y Peralejo is one of the hiking routes in the area around El Castillo de las Guardas.

A 2017 mountain biking route description gives the route as “MINAS DEL CASTILLO-PERALEJO-PINAR DE CHICLANA-MINAS DEL CASTILLO” and takes riders from the Reserva in the direction of El Peralejo. The same description notes that shortly before the entrance to the settlement, after a stretch of road, there is a short but steep climb to the left. As current access conditions and vegetation may differ, check the conditions before riding.
