Almayate Alto brings together several ways to explore the area’s local and cultural history: a medieval alquería, the Torre de la Alquería, a simple chapel and a quarry with a history of use. For travelers who want to take cultural and local history into account when choosing where to stay, the focus is on archaeological, architectural and historical themes. The settlement pattern, buildings and quarry history each add a distinct perspective.

Settlement Area and Archaeological Site

Almayate Alto is the inland settlement area of Almayate, spread out around the Ermita Alta. The Despoblado de Almayate Alto is an archaeological site containing a medieval alquería. The names refer to different scales: Almayate Alto denotes the settlement area, while the Despoblado is the archaeological site. The only visible above-ground feature of the site is the remains of a tower. This distinction helps locate the settlement area and the specific archaeological site in relation to one another.

The Nasrid Tower

The Torre de la Alquería de Almayate is a defensive watchtower from the Nasrid period, dating from the 13th to the 15th century. It is badly deteriorated, but remains clearly recognizable within the archaeological site of Almayate’s Nasrid alquería. Its function and date provide two specific historical reference points; its condition is also part of the description of the structure. This makes it possible to place the tower both in time and in terms of its former purpose.

A Simple Chapel

Another historic building is the Ermita de la Inmaculada Concepción in Almayate Alto. The simple chapel has a plain entrance area, a mono-pitch roof and a small bell gable. Compared with the Torre, it represents a different type of building: a chapel here, a defensive watchtower there. For architecture enthusiasts, the difference lies not only in their functions but also in their described forms. The chapel is characterized by its entrance, roof and bell gable, while the tower is characterized by its Nasrid-era origins and defensive function.

Quarry and Historical Use

The Almayate Alto quarry consists of calcareous sandstone and adds a geological perspective to the area’s history. Its earliest known use was for a Mozarabic rock-cut church. In the mid-18th century, the quarry was put back into use to supply stone for the only tower of Málaga Cathedral. The account thus traces its use from an early rock-cut church to a later use as building material for a church structure. If you are interested in architecture, this perspective—from the rock itself, through its use, to a specific building project in Málaga—offers an additional point of interest.

A Seasonal Cultural Event in Almayate

Every year at Christmas, Almayate’s residents stage a live Nativity play at the Colegio Público “Juan Paniagua” in late December. Unlike the themes of local and architectural history, this event is tied to the Christmas season. If you are planning a trip during this period, it is best to check the exact performance dates.
