Two themes provide clear guidance when choosing La Duquesa: the Roman past at Castillo de la Duquesa and the different features of its beaches. Culture enthusiasts can distinguish the former Roman use, the archaeological site and the later Castillo in chronological order. If you’re planning days by the coast, you can compare the sandy areas and fishing spots at Playa de El Castillo with the harbour setting and interest in diving at Playa de La Duquesa.
Castillo and Roman archaeological site
Castillo de la Duquesa was built in 1767 by Francisco Paulino. The ground plan and construction management were entrusted to the engineer Don Miguel del Castillo. Visitors can trace the history of Manilva at the monument. The year of construction, the building work and the tasks entrusted to the engineer each provide different clues to the origins of the structure.
The site also has an older layer of history: the Castillo stands where a Roman villa once stood. The Roman archaeological site “Entorno del Castillo de la Duquesa” dates from the 1st to the 5th century AD. A chronological comparison therefore places the construction of the Castillo in 1767 alongside the Roman archaeological site.
“Entorno del Castillo de la Duquesa” is one of two significant archaeological sites in Manilva designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Manilva displays only objects from this Roman archaeological site. This provides a specific connection for cultural itineraries: visitors can trace the history of Manilva at the Castillo, while the archaeological site and museum link the Roman past to a particular place and collection.
Coastal beach profiles
Playa de El Castillo includes extensive sandy beaches and rocky areas for fishing. There are designated spots where families can enjoy the sun and beach. Chiringuitos at this beach serve fish dishes; individual businesses and the availability of their offerings may change.
Playa de La Duquesa borders the Puerto Deportivo de La Duquesa on one side. A man-made rocky outcrop divides the beach into two areas; there is also strong interest in diving there. When choosing a beach setting, you can weigh up the options: Playa de El Castillo combines sand, fishing and fish dishes; Playa de La Duquesa brings together the harbour setting, the division into two areas and interest in diving.
