Two long-distance hiking trail stages begin in Coto-Ríos: Stage 4 of the GR-7 and Stage 2 of the GR 247.2 variant. There are also routes along the Río Aguamulas and Río Borosa, nature interpretation facilities and a history of its own. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering the hikes and places to visit according to their respective starting points and main attractions.

Hiking trails from Coto-Ríos and the surrounding area

Stage 4 of the GR-7 begins in Coto-Ríos. The initial path is marked with the long-distance trail’s red and white waymarkers. Stage 2 of the GR 247.2 variant also starts in the settlement and leads to the Río Borosa, where it reaches the starting point of the Borosa hiking trail. The GR 247.2 stage is 15.75 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of five hours and 41 minutes. It passes Torre del Vinagre at kilometre 6.3. This time is an estimate; check trail conditions before setting out.

The Borosa hiking trail begins at the fish farm car park, next to the Torre del Vinagre Visitor Centre, about five kilometres from Coto-Ríos. Another route option is the 21-kilometre Félix Rodríguez de la Fuente trail, which passes through the Coto-Ríos area and includes five viewpoints. The routes differ in their starting points, lengths and courses, so plan your day around the specific stage mentioned rather than treating the trails as one continuous route.

The route along the Río Aguamulas also begins in Coto-Ríos. It follows a short tributary of the Guadalquivir, which rises below Las Banderillas, through ferns, moss and pine forests. Coto-Ríos is also the closest access point to the summit of Las Banderillas. If you plan to walk one of these routes, check current trail conditions in advance.

Observe nature and understand the landscape

The grounds of the Piscifactoría del Borosa have a circular trail with springs, benches and several viewpoints. You can watch and photograph semi-free-roaming deer, Spanish ibex, fallow deer and mouflon there. There is also a botanical garden near the Piscifactoría. Its plant collection ranges from small herbaceous plants to large trees found in the nature park.

The Collado del Almendral Wildlife Centre is near Coto-Ríos and offers a guided ride on a tourist train as well as a circular walking trail. It is a separate destination; the Piscifactoría del Borosa and its facilities are distinct from it.

The Chopera de Coto-Ríos is set in dense pine forest with riverside vegetation. It has wooden tables and benches, a kiosk bar and a shaded pergola. As the facilities available may change, check what is currently on offer before your visit.

Visitor centres and cultural insights

The Torre del Vinagre Visitor Centre offers several ways to interpret the landscape: audiovisual projections, an interactive topographic model, an exhibition area for children and five landscape interpretation areas. It also offers guided tours and workshops on the natural and cultural values of the protected area. Check current visitor information and opening arrangements before travelling there.

The Río Borosa River Interpretation Centre focuses on the nature park’s river network and the Río Borosa catchment area. A graphic display and a topographic model explain these connections. A circular route along the river and through the sculptural-looking riverside forest explores aquatic wildlife. Be sure to check current access arrangements before visiting.

Coto-Ríos was established in the 20th century as a colonisation settlement for residents of scattered cortijadas and small hamlets. The resettlements were connected with the establishment of the Coto Nacional de Caza Cazorla–Segura and a new water policy. One prominent cultural landmark in the settlement is the Church of San Miguel Arcángel: its white religious building stands out for its ashlar façade and blue ceramic tiles.

The traditional celebration of Santiago Apóstol in Coto-Ríos includes a pilgrimage from Torre del Vinagre to the settlement. The festivities conclude with a communal meal organised by the brotherhood and local residents. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the current programme in advance.

When looking for a hotel for your trip to Coto-Ríos, you can start by deciding which route or place to visit will shape your stay.
