In Marmolejo, cultural history and outdoor activities stand out as distinct travel themes. Around the Balneario, the focus is on the history of the spa, medical practice and buildings on the Guadalquivir. The Sierra, the Cristóbal Relaño viewpoint and the Finca Municipal de La Dehesilla offer different highlights. The options range from an art collection and historic architecture to hiking, canoeing and astronomical observation.
Spa history and buildings on the Guadalquivir
At the Centro de Interpretación del Balneario de Marmolejo, housed in the Casa del Médico, visitors can learn about the spa’s heyday. The centre includes an exact reconstruction of the consulting room and office of the spa doctor of the time. Medical instruments from the late 19th century complete the display. The Casa del Médico and its gardens are designated a historic site and a Bien de Interés Cultural.
A Renaissance bridge at the Balneario crosses the Guadalquivir. Construction began in 1550 and ended in 1587. Alongside the spa’s medical history, this structure from the second half of the 16th century is another point of interest. The Castillo de la Aragonesa offers a further historical highlight: it lies in the Vega del Guadalquivir on the border between Jaén and Córdoba, near a branch of the Roman road that runs along the river. Its history includes a Muslim phase with a Berber fortress and a later Christian phase, when the keep was built.
Art and different periods
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Mayte SpĂnola complements the historical themes with an eclectic collection of more than 250 works. It reflects artistic trends from the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The cultural highlights therefore differ clearly: the reconstruction at the Centro de InterpretaciĂłn focuses on medical practice in the late 19th century, while the museum collection includes art from more recent periods.
The cultural options thus bring together architectural history, the development of the spa and modern art. Visitors particularly interested in the history of fortifications can also explore the two construction phases of the Castillo de la Aragonesa: the Berber fortress from the Muslim phase and the later Christian keep. This sequence makes the historical difference between the two building phases tangible.
Sierra, viewpoints and outdoor activities
The municipal Finca La Dehesilla lies in the northwestern part of the municipality of Marmolejo and covers 300 hectares. Typical Mediterranean woodland alternates with dehesa pastureland. The Sierra de Marmolejo is part of a Starlight Reserve and a Starlight Tourist Destination; it also offers opportunities for astronomical observation. The landscape and night sky provide a different focus from the town’s architectural and artistic history.
The Cristóbal Relaño viewpoint can be reached from Marmolejo via the A-420 towards Córdoba, followed by the JV-5001. The JV-5001 continues for another 7 km to the viewpoint. The La Centenera hiking trail starts there. Those planning a hike have a specific starting point in mind; the road directions also explain how to get there, without specifying a walking time or the trail’s difficulty.
The Finca Municipal de La Dehesilla is used for camping, hiking, zip-lining and canoeing. Fishing is available at the Yeguas Reservoir; fish species include black bass, carp and boga. These activities offer different experiences: hiking and zip-lining differ from canoeing or fishing. Marmolejo’s Feria y fiestas includes sporting, cultural, recreational, musical and traditional activities; individual events vary from one edition to the next.
Planning your trip around your interests
For a culture-focused trip, options include the interpretation centre, the Renaissance bridge, the Castillo de la Aragonesa and the collection at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Mayte SpĂnola. Those who prefer to focus on landscapes and outdoor activities can explore the dehesa pastureland, enjoy astronomical observation, follow the La Centenera hiking trail, or take part in recreational activities at the finca and the Yeguas Reservoir. This lets you choose a focus based on your interests, rather than treating the different places and activities as a set itinerary.
