Arroyo Frio combines a direct connection to the river with several options for active days: a hiking trail follows the young Guadalquivir to the Cerrada del Utrero, while guided horseback rides and multi-adventure programmes are available in the village. Arroyo Frio has numerous accommodation options and is a strategic base for reaching some of the most remarkable places in the natural park. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore worth first considering what kind of activity you want to focus on—riverbank scenery and birds, elevation gain on a route, or a guided activity programme.

Along the Guadalquivir: Riverbank Vegetation and Birdlife

The Arroyo Frio–Cerrada del Utrero hiking trail is part of the “Rutas del Agua” group and follows the young Guadalquivir, with dense riverbank vegetation along the way. Nightingales (Luscinia megarhynchos) and orioles live along the banks. At the end of the trail lies the Cerrada del Utrero, a deep gorge carved by the Guadalquivir. The route thus combines a stretch along the riverbank with a striking landscape destination. If you are particularly interested in river landscapes and the birds that live there, you will find both on this same route.

Two Routes, Different Ways to Find Your Bearings

When choosing a route, you can distinguish the trail to the Cerrada from the “Derivación 04: Puerto de las Palomas–Arroyo Frio” route. This route crosses the Guadalquivir in its upper reaches, reaches Arroyo Frio and connects to the “Bosques del Sur” hiking trail. The Puerto de las Palomas–Arroyo Frio route covers almost 400 metres of elevation gain in less than three kilometres. The routes have different focal points: the trail to the Cerrada centres on the riverbank and gorge, while the elevation gain and connection to Bosques del Sur can help guide your choice of Derivación 04.

Guided Horseback Rides and Multi-Adventures

Picadero El Campillo in Arroyo Frio offers horseback rides in the Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park, accompanied by local guides. Confirm the current arrangements before your trip. Cazorlaventur offers programmes in Arroyo Frio for a range of multi-adventure activities and different groups. When choosing between the options, it is best to check which specific programme is suitable for your group; confirm availability before booking. Guided horseback rides and multi-adventure programmes are thus two different options to consider when planning your trip.

Getting There and Planning Your Routes

From Cazorla, the A-319 road leads to Arroyo Frio, the starting point for the hiking trail. Before travelling, it is advisable to check road conditions and any possible restrictions. For the routes, it helps to consider the specific details separately: the trail to the Cerrada follows the young Guadalquivir, while the Puerto de las Palomas–Arroyo Frio route is described as covering almost 400 metres of elevation gain in less than three kilometres. This lets you take the characteristics of each route into account when choosing, without treating them as a single trail.

Festival in August

From 13 to 15 August, Arroyo Frio and El Palmar celebrate the festival in honour of the Assumption of Mary. If your trip falls during this period, check the current programme.
