When looking for a holiday apartment in El Rincón, you can also consider places of interest in the surrounding area when choosing your destination. They focus on botanical attractions, wetlands, a saltworks trail and a variety of forest landscapes. Each place has its own distinct character: botany, birdwatching, the history of salt production, rare coastal forests and the connection between the landscape and its former uses. If you think in advance about which topics interest you, you can choose your destinations more selectively.
Wetlands, Plants and Saltworks
In the area around El Rincón, the Anastasio Senra Visitor Centre has a botanical educational trail, lagoons with a birdwatching hide and a demonstration garden for native vegetation. This brings botany and birdwatching together: the trail and garden focus on botanical topics, while the hide offers views of the lagoons and their birdlife.
Also in the surrounding area is the Salinas de Bacuta trail. It features an ornithological educational trail, a birdwatching hide, viewpoints and a saltworks interpretation centre. Unlike the botanical focus at Anastasio Senra, here ornithology and the history of salt production are the main themes.
The two destinations can therefore be distinguished by interest: at the visitor centre, the botanical trail and demonstration garden are paired with the lagoons; Salinas de Bacuta combines birdlife with an interpretation of the saltworks. If you are particularly interested in native vegetation, Anastasio Senra offers a different focus from the saltworks trail. If you would rather explore the saltworks landscape and its birdwatching opportunities, Salinas de Bacuta offers this combination.
Forest Landscapes and Planning Your Visit
In the area around El Rincón, Enebrales de Punta Umbría is one of the few remaining mixed forests of junipers and savin junipers on the Andalusian coast. It has signposted trails for walking and cycling. This sets the forest apart from the wetlands and saltworks trails: in addition to its distinctive composition, it offers marked routes for two different activities.
La Gravera Observatory is in Puntales, a forest area within the Cañada del Corcho y Rincón public forest, which lies in the Marismas del Odiel Natural Area. At La Gravera, abandoned extraction sites were restored as freshwater lagoons. The freshwater wetlands lie amid salty marshes and support diverse birdlife. The contrast between the freshwater lagoons and their salty surroundings gives this area a different focus from the Salinas de Bacuta saltworks trail.
The observatory is built in the style of traditional huts. Such huts once served as homes for many families, whose work depended on the resources of the marsh. The design therefore refers to a former way of life closely connected to the use of this landscape.
A permit from the natural area offices is required to visit the observatory. Alternatively, the visit can be arranged through the reception centre and its appointed operator. As permit requirements may change, check the current arrangements in advance.
The Valle Romero recreation area is also located in the same public forest. Its name adds a recreation area to the selection of places mentioned, while Enebrales de Punta Umbría is characterised by its mixed forest and signposted trails.
