La Herradura combines a long town beach with a bay, a protected coastal area and a local history that can be seen in several places. When choosing where to stay, you can first consider whether you are mainly looking for time by the water, water sports, a scenic route or cultural discoveries.

Coast and protected natural area

Playa La Herradura is 2,050 metres long and more than 40 metres wide. The town beach consists of dark sand and pebbles. A lifeguard and beach safety service operates at the beach; seasonal provision may vary. If lifeguard coverage is important to your travel plans, check whether the service will be available on your dates.

In the wider region between Nerja and Almuñécar lies the protected area of Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo. Its landscape includes rugged cliffs, beaches and small coves, as well as an ecologically valuable stretch of sea. A viewpoint in La Herradura is at the eastern end of this natural area. From there, you can see the rugged coastline and its underwater world.

Bay and water sports

La Herradura Bay offers a suitable setting in the Mediterranean for water sports such as diving. Parque Subacuático Almuñécar-La Herradura includes artificial reefs recreating sunken galleons and amphora factories, as well as training areas for recreational diving. The bay thus offers both the natural marine landscape and purpose-built underwater structures.

Sailing and trips on the water are also among the local activities: Windsurf La Herradura offers beginner courses in windsurfing, dinghy sailing and catamaran sailing, as well as kayak and stand-up paddleboard trips towards Maro/Cerro Gordo. Puerto Deportivo Marina del Este is located in the Punta de la Mona area of La Herradura. It has 227 berths and a dry dock offering boat maintenance and repair services.

Circular trail and townscape

Sendero Torre de Cerro Gordo is a short circular trail leading to the Cerro Gordo watchtower on the edge of the protected area. Its descent offers panoramic views of La Herradura Bay. The trail thus combines views of the coast with a specific destination: the watchtower.

Narrow, cobbled streets shape the townscape of the Casco Antiguo, decorated with ceramic flower boxes from Granada. The area is also home to more than 150 murals inspired by La Herradura’s local identity. The streets and murals offer a different focus from the coastal trail: they turn attention to design and local history in the old town.

History, festivals and further discoveries

Iglesia de San José became the parish church of La Herradura in 1907. It is dedicated to San José, the patron saint of the town. The patron saint festivities are also associated with his name: they take place around 19 March. On 19 March, a procession passes through the historic centre and ends with a fireworks display. If you are planning to travel specifically for the celebrations, check the dates for the relevant year.

Castillo de La Herradura dates back to a decision made in 1764: Carlos III ordered its construction as a defensive fort because the bay was threatened by pirate and privateer raids and landings. The “1562, la Furia del Mar” interpretation centre commemorates the sinking of the Armada in 1562 in the sea bay of La Herradura. Another reminder of the area’s maritime history is the Monumento a los Hombres del Mar, a bronze work by Miguel Moreno. It depicts the maritime tradition and the 16th-century shipwreck of the Armada Felipe II.

The Herradura Coffee Farm offers a different facet of the area: on guided tours, you can explore an agricultural estate where coffee and a wide variety of tropical fruits are grown. Guitar culture is also part of La Herradura’s events calendar: in 2025, the Andrés Segovia competition was held there for its 40th edition. It is an established event in the guitar world and a major cultural occasion.
