For a selection in Goseong focused on culture and natural history, two themes can be distinguished: archaeological evidence from the Samhan and Gaya periods, and exhibits featuring Korean freshwater life. The Dongoe-dong archaeological site and the Songhak-dong tombs are located in Goseong-eup, as is the Goseong Ecological Learning Center. These themes appeal to different interests: early settlements and burial sites on the one hand, and fish and waterways on the other. The historical sites reveal different facets of the Samhan and Gaya periods, while the center focuses on natural history.

Dongoe-dong Archaeological Site

The Dongoe-dong archaeological site includes settlement remains, a shell mound, and ritual sites from the Samhan and Gaya periods. The site brings together traces of settlement and ritual places from two historical periods. Finds from China and Japan make the site an important testament to maritime exchange at the time. This interpretation adds a perspective on contacts across the sea to the individual types of archaeological evidence. Dongoe-dong was designated a historic site in June 2024. The year refers to the designation, while the remains mentioned connect the site to the earlier periods.

The Songhak-dong Tombs

The Songhak-dong tombs comprise seven tombs from the Gaya period and are considered a representative tomb group of that era. In 2023, they were inscribed alongside six other tomb groups as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Gaya Tumuli.” The number seven indicates the size of the group at Songhak-dong; the UNESCO inscription includes six other tomb groups. This distinguishes the specific tomb group from the larger, jointly listed World Heritage Site.

The two archaeological sites have different emphases. Dongoe-dong brings together settlement remains, a shell mound, and ritual sites from the Samhan and Gaya periods with the theme of maritime exchange. Songhak-dong focuses on a representative Gaya tomb group and its inclusion in the joint UNESCO listing. In terms of choosing what to explore, Dongoe-dong represents several types of archaeological evidence from two periods, while Songhak-dong represents tombs from one period and the broader World Heritage context.

Freshwater and Fish Species

The Goseong Ecological Learning Center in Goseong-eup has aquariums featuring freshwater life from water quality classes 1 to 3, an exhibition on rare fish species in Korea, and a tunnel aquarium with sturgeon. Each of the three areas has a different focus: the aquariums feature freshwater life and water quality classes, the exhibition focuses on rare fish species in Korea, and the tunnel aquarium on sturgeon. This allows the natural history theme to be considered in terms of its connection to waterways, rare species, and the dedicated sturgeon exhibit. Alongside the archaeological evidence, the center offers a different perspective on Goseong-eup. Travelers who want to include natural history as well as history in their plans can consider this focus separately from the historical sites.
