Temple history, mountain landscapes and island nature offer three distinct perspectives on Gyeongsangbuk-do. Between historic structures, landscapes shaped by cliffs and valleys, and a volcanic island in the East Sea, there are many different themes to explore on a trip. When choosing your accommodation, first consider whether you want to focus mainly on cultural heritage, hiking landscapes or nature by the sea.

Cultural Heritage and Architecture

Buseoksa Temple is home to Muryangsujeon Hall, considered Korea’s oldest wooden building. Byeongsan Seowon is known for its outstanding setting and impressive architecture. These two sites invite different perspectives: one focuses on a specific building, the other on architecture in relation to its landscape.

In Gyeongju, Bulguksa Temple was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1995. The Daereungwon Ancient Tomb Complex is the largest group of burial mounds in Gyeongju. The two sites highlight different aspects of history: one centers on a temple, the other on a group of burial mounds.

Andong Hahoe Village is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hahoe Byeolsingut Tallori, the Hahoe mask dance drama, is performed regularly; check the dates before your trip. Manhyujeong Pavilion in Andong was built in 1500 and adds a specific historical landmark to your cultural discoveries.

The artificial Wolji Pond at Donggung Palace creates a nighttime landscape as the palace lights reflect in the water. Alongside the temples and historic sites, this carefully designed waterscape offers its own cultural highlight.

Mountains, National Park and Island Nature

The Taebaeksanmaek and Sobaeksanmaek mountain ranges run through Gyeongsangbuk-do. Trekking and hiking are possible in the region’s mountain landscapes, including areas such as the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range. Those who choose their trip for the scenery will find a different focus here than at the temples and historic sites.

Mount Juwangsan was designated a national park in 1976, and its landscape is characterized by cliffs and valleys. The Space Walk in Pohang offers a different kind of landmark: it has a total of 717 steps. This specific number gives a concise description of the site, while Juwangsan is defined by its protected mountain landscape.

Ulleungdo is a volcanic island in the East Sea with a unique ecosystem. Dokdo is designated a nature reserve and consists of the two islands Dongdo and Seodo. This broadens the landscape theme from mountain ranges to islands, each with its own character: a volcanic island with a distinctive ecosystem, and a designated protected area comprising two islands.

Andong Soju and Practical Information

Andong soju is a traditional liquor designated as intangible cultural heritage in Korea. The Andong Soju & Traditional Food Museum presents the origins and production of Andong soju and offers tastings. Check the latest visitor information before your visit.

To travel to Andong, the KTX-Eum connects Seoul Station, Cheongnyangni Station or Sangbong Station with Andong Station. Check the latest timetable before your trip. If Andong and its cultural sites are your main focus, this train connection may be useful when planning your trip; for other interests, the mountain and island landscapes offer their own reasons to explore the region.
