Gunpo brings together hiking trails, ecological themes and places of cultural and historical interest. One distinction is useful when planning your trip: lengths and walking times are provided for several trails, while the azalea festival is seasonal and observatory operating details may change.

Hiking Trails and Timing

Three numbered trails can be compared by their approximate lengths and stated walking times. Course 6, the Galchi Lake Trail, is about 5.8 kilometers long, with a stated walking time of 1 hour 30 minutes. Course 7, the Angol Trail, is about 4 kilometers and takes 1 hour 10 minutes. Course 8, the Banwol Lake Trail, is the longest of the three listed courses, at about 8 kilometers and 2 hours 30 minutes. Accordingly, the Angol Trail has the shortest stated walking time, and the Banwol Lake Trail the longest. These times can help you gauge how long a hike you want to take; check current trail conditions before setting out.

There is also a 3.4-kilometer loop around Banwol Lake, connecting Surisan with Daeya Lake. Banwol Lake is in Dundae-dong, Gunpo-si, and was completed in 1957. Surisan itself extends across parts of Anyang, Ansan and Gunpo-si. It was designated a provincial park on July 16, 2009. The park area therefore extends beyond Gunpo-si.

Chomakgol: Nature and Cultural Heritage

Chomakgol Ecological Park brings together Surisan’s natural environment and cultural heritage from the Joseon period. It is connected to Surisan Provincial Park and Cheoljjuk Park, forming an important ecological green corridor in Gunpo-si. A distinctive feature of the park is Chomak Dongcheon, a landmark representing Byeongpung Rock and Kal Rock, both symbolic rocks of Surisan.

The Ecology Exhibition Center presents a range of topics related to nature, animals and plants through hands-on programs and play facilities. Program availability may vary. A travel article from April 2021 also describes a restored wetland that serves as a habitat for the endangered narrow-mouthed frog, identifying the species as a protected flagship species there. The same article mentions a wildflower garden featuring restored wildflowers native to the Surisan area.

Observatory and Regional History

The Nuri Observatory, operated by Gunpo City, is located at Daeya Library. Its rooftop garden contains an astronomical observation room and a planetarium; on the fourth floor are an astronomy and space experience center and a 4D cinema. As a city-run learning venue, the observatory focuses on astronomy and space. Operating details may change, so check the latest information before visiting.

The area’s cultural history is also tied to specific places and dates. The old Park family house in Dundae-dong was the residence of Park Yong-deok, who led rural enlightenment work in the Gunpo area in the 1930s. The house was designated local cultural heritage by Gunpo-si on November 27, 2019. The site of the Joseon white porcelain kilns in Gunpo-si is an important regional kiln heritage site dating from the late 15th to early 16th century.

The Gunpo Azalea Festival is a seasonal spring flower festival held in the area around Azalea Hill and Azalea Park. Its program includes performances, hands-on activities and food options, with residents and visitors able to take part together. If you plan to attend, check the specific event dates.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

The offerings mainly differ in their timing and focus: the walking times make the hiking courses easy to compare, the Azalea Festival adds a seasonal highlight, and the park and cultural attractions appeal to other interests.
