The Ansan Reed Wetland was created as Korea’s first large-scale artificial wetland to improve the water quality of Lake Sihwa. It is also a habitat for more than 100 bird species, as well as around 290 species of wildflowers and aquatic plants. The Environmental and Ecology Center has telescopes for observing the wetland and migratory birds. Its connection to water quality and the opportunity to observe migratory birds offer two distinct ways to experience the wetland.

Nature and trails at different scales

A walking path about 3.6 kilometers long runs through the center of Ansan Lake Park. Mugunghwa Garden offers a different natural highlight: it is home to around 30,000 plants representing more than 300 varieties of Mugunghwa, the Rose of Sharon.

Daebudo Haesolgil covers a much larger scale: this coastal hiking trail on Daebudo, in the Ansan area, is 91 kilometers long in total and comprises ten routes. It passes through pine forests, salt fields, sunset viewpoints, coastal areas, tidal flats, vineyards and rural landscapes. The trail begins at Bangameori Ferry Terminal and runs via Gubongdo, Daebunamdong, Seongamdo and Tando Port to the Daesong Complex.

Culture, everyday life and history

The Ansan Fishing Village Folk Museum was established to preserve and exhibit the lives and culture of fishermen. The second exhibition room displays a variety of fishing gear. The third room focuses on Daebudo: it presents dinosaur footprint fossils, finds from Neolithic settlements, and other historic sites and artifacts from the island.

Multicultural Street offers another cultural perspective on Ansan. It is a cultural space where people of many nationalities live. Cultural events are occasionally held there, introducing traditions from different countries.

The Ansan Industrial History Museum displays machinery and industrial objects used in actual industrial facilities.

Suam-dong offers a different historical highlight. There, Ansan Fortress and Government Office were built on a westward-running ridge of Suambong, enclosing a plain. It is considered a typical lowland fortress, and its origins are believed to date to the late Goryeo period.

Glass art on Daebudo

Glass Island on Daebudo brings together several forms of glass art: the complex includes a glass museum, a demonstration area and a hands-on glass art experience area. Activities range from lampworking, glassblowing, glass painting and sandblasting to making watches from wine bottles and glass bracelets.

These attractions offer a range of themes to explore: nature observation in the wetland, trails in the park or along the coast, glass art on Daebudo, and various perspectives on culture and history.
