A waterfall and viewpoints overlooking Wellington, as well as the Hawequa and Groenberg Mountains, are part of the Welvanpas Hiking Trail. In Wellington, a museum, wine and cultural experiences round out the picture. If you are looking for a hotel in Wellington, first consider whether your trip is mainly about a hike, a multi-day route, or history and culture.

Hiking: a circular trail or a multi-day route

The Welvanpas Hiking Trail is 7.5 kilometres long and follows a circular route. A hike takes two hours; along the way, there is a waterfall and viewpoints overlooking Wellington, as well as the Hawequa and Groenberg Mountains. There are options for shortening the route when hiking with children. Mountain biking is also available on the trail. Check the current operating conditions before your hike. As a circular route, the trail leads back to the starting point.

The Wellington Wine Walk is considerably longer: the hiking route takes three or four days and passes through vineyards, olive groves, buchu fields and vine-cutting plantations. Overnight stays in guesthouses on some historic Huguenot farms are part of the route. It also includes picnic lunches and olive and wine tastings. This is clearly a different time commitment from the two-hour hike on the Welvanpas Hiking Trail. Check the current availability of the Wine Walk and overnight stays before your trip.

Culture and history in Wellington

The Wellington Museum displays Stone Age artefacts, a significant collection of Egyptian artefacts, and exhibitions about pioneers who shaped the history of Wellington and South Africa. The museum also showcases the cultures of various African ethnic groups and maintains connections with the USA, England, Scotland, France and the Netherlands. Its subject matter therefore encompasses both the history of Wellington and South Africa and a range of cultural connections.

The Breytenbach Centre offers a different cultural focus: visitors can take part in discussions and experience drama. The Kardoes art shop is also part of the centre. Alongside the museum’s collections and exhibitions, Wellington’s cultural offerings therefore include discussions, drama and art.

Winegrowing and local spirits

Welvanpas Family Vineyards has been associated with the Retief family for more than ten generations; its history dates back to 1705. Wellington’s wine scene therefore also has a long family history.

Uil Craft Stookhuis focuses on spirit production. When local fruit is in season, it makes traditional mampoer. The distillery also produces gin with eight selected botanicals. Mampoer’s seasonal connection and the specific number of botanicals offer two different insights into local production.
