Sedgefield can be explored through two distinctive aspects: its coastline and the mosaic art around town. The Swartvlei lake system is periodically open to the sea; the Sedgefield Community Mosaic Project connects local art with a story that dates back to 2008. Together, these themes offer different starting points as you plan your trip.
Beaches, Estuary and Nature Reserve
The five beaches stretch for about eight kilometres, from Platbank Beach in the east to Gericke’s Point farther west. These endpoints help orient you along the coastline. The Swartvlei lake system near Sedgefield is another landmark by the water and opens to the sea periodically.
When the estuary is open to the sea, the mouth of the Swartvlei River in Sedgefield is a popular swimming spot. However, the outgoing tidal current can be strong. Follow local advice if you plan to swim there.
Another natural attraction, the Goukamma Nature Reserve and Marine Protected Area, is near Sedgefield, on the Garden Route between Sedgefield and Knysna. If you plan to visit, check the latest access information with the relevant reserve authority. This lets you include the protected area as a separate stop in your trip planning, without confusing it with the beaches or the river mouth.
Mosaic Art and Local Activities
The Sedgefield Community Mosaic Project was launched in 2008 by the local NGO Masithandane as a skills-development and support project. Mosaic art is therefore not just something to see on a walk around town; it is also linked to a specific local project.
The self-guided Sedgefield Mosaic Route passes more than 65 mosaic artworks. You can complete the self-drive tour in about 90 minutes. Its scope and duration may change. The self-guided route offers a different way to explore from Masithandane’s mosaic art tours: on these tours, visitors can meet the team behind the works and hear the stories that inspired them. Check the latest tour availability before visiting.
Masithandane also offers interactive mosaic workshops and classes, as well as mosaic parties for children and adults. Offerings may change; check with the provider for current options. If you are interested in how the artworks are made, you can choose between a self-guided route, a tour featuring stories about the mosaics, and interactive activities.
The Mosaic Market and Scarab Village are also among the local options. They offer South African art, handmade clothing, metalwork, wood products, hand-spun wool and ceramics. Products and opening arrangements may change.
A three-metre-tall mosaic statue of the Knysna Seahorse is mounted on one of the original fishing boats used at Gericke’s Point. The boat was donated by Christopher Fredericks; the statue was unveiled in 2023.
Another Perspective on Sedgefield
Cloud 9, on the ridge above Sedgefield, is the main launch site for paragliding operators. Launch arrangements and operator availability may change. If paragliding is part of your travel plans, confirm the current options directly with the operator.
When deciding whether Sedgefield is the right destination for you, start by weighing up whether the coast or the mosaic art should shape your stay more. The beaches, self-guided route, tours and workshops offer different ways to spend your time in town. If Sedgefield fits your plans, you can search for hotels in the area.
