Bellville combines green spaces with notable cultural and historic sites. Three distinct highlights stand out: Jack Muller Park, with its recreational and event facilities; Elizabeth Park, a central green space along the Elsieskraal River; and art and architectural landmarks. This distinction can help you plan a stay: each park has a different character, while the art collection and milestone offer a cultural focus.
Parks with Different Features
Jack Muller Park, also known as Danie Uys Park, is in Bellville, right next to the N1 and the Durban Road activity corridor. The park has an amphitheatre, an outdoor fitness area and picnic facilities. It hosts outdoor events such as corporate events, children's parties, charity events and concerts; its green lawns are popular with runners.
Elizabeth Park has a different character: it is a public green space in the centre of Bellville, surrounded by office buildings, student residences and other buildings. The Elsieskraal River flows through the park and helps sustain native birds, amphibians and insects. Facilities include an amphitheatre with a basketball court, an outdoor fitness machine, benches and public lighting.
The parks differ in their location and facilities: Elizabeth Park is centrally located and connected to the river, while Jack Muller Park is right next to the N1 and the Durban Road activity corridor. Their fitness facilities also differ: Elizabeth Park has an outdoor fitness machine, while Jack Muller Park has an outdoor fitness area. This comparison helps you consider each green space in terms of its location and activities.
Elizabeth Park opened on 2 June 1953. The City of Cape Town upgraded it in 2018/19 at a cost of 20 million rand. The work included renovating the riverside path and landscaping, and building an amphitheatre. The opening date and subsequent upgrade mark two distinct stages in the park's history: its opening, followed by a specific construction project with named works.
Art and Visible City History
The Sanlam Art Collection can be viewed at the Sanlam Art Gallery in Bellville. This gives visitors a dedicated art attraction in addition to the parks.
Bellville's 12th Mile is a milestone dating from the 19th century. The massive bluestone block has a triangular top and bears the engraved Roman numeral XII, meaning twelve. Together with an oil lamp, the milestone stands outside Elizabeth Park at the corner of Voortrekker Road and Durban Road. Two historic objects are therefore identified at this street corner: the distinctive milestone with its inscription and an oil lamp. The precise location also distinguishes these landmarks from the green space of Elizabeth Park.
