For a stay in Kwamhlanga, nearby Kghodwana Cultural Village and Museum offers a specific cultural focus. Its huts, settlement layouts and artefacts illustrate aspects of Amandebele culture. In the broader travel region of Gauteng, nature, South African history and archaeological heritage are also in focus. These different scales help you consider local culture and regional interests separately.
Kghodwana Cultural Village: settlements and ways of life
The former KwaNdebele government founded Kghodwana Cultural Village and Museum in November 1989. Its purpose was to preserve and maintain the culture of South Africa’s isiNdebele-speaking people. The village illustrates how Amandebele settlements developed across different eras. The focus is therefore not only on a single object, but also on how traditional settlement patterns and ways of life can be represented.
The Village includes 36 traditional huts that illustrate different forms of settlement and living. Huts, paintings and artefacts convey Amandebele culture. On an educational tour, visitors learn more about the way of life of the Amandebele and Nguni; various arrangements of traditional huts are shown. The natural building materials mentioned include poplar wood, grass, ropes, straw, clay and cow dung.
The different hut arrangements give the tour its own focus: it explores settlement patterns as well as people’s way of life. If you plan to visit Kghodwana Cultural Village, check with the museum in advance about current tour arrangements.
Tourism orientation in Thembisile Hani Municipality
The associated Thembisile Hani Municipality also offers a broader geographical context for travel planning. Its 2024–2025 integrated development plan’s tourism inventory lists Zithabiseni Holiday Resort among the municipality’s tourist attractions. Mabusa Nature Reserve is also listed, and the plan describes it as needing restoration. Before making specific plans to visit, check with Mabusa Nature Reserve for its current visitor status.
The municipality’s tourism plan also names Loopspruit Winery in Schoongezicht as part of its main tourism hub. It places the site east of the R568 between Kwamhlanga and Ekangala to the south. This makes it possible to distinguish the site’s location within the municipality from the cultural highlights in the immediate vicinity of Kwamhlanga.
Gauteng: nature and history on a broader scale
In the broader travel region of Gauteng, nature ranges from plant diversity to birdlife. About 240 bird species have been recorded at Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden; a pair of Verreaux’s eagles also breeds there. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden is home to more than 600 plant species. Together, these figures give an impression of the botanical diversity and recorded bird species at this garden site.
Dinokeng, in northern Gauteng, is a region with natural, cultural and historical heritage sites. Dinokeng Game Reserve covers 19,000 hectares, is malaria-free and is Gauteng’s only free-roaming Big Five game reserve. A 70-kilometre self-drive route offers a distinct way to explore the reserve alongside guided game drives. Other activities include horse riding, hiking, quad biking and hot-air ballooning.
The historical themes also offer distinct perspectives. Constitution Hill is a living museum about South Africa’s transition from colonialism and apartheid to democracy. Freedom Park commemorates chapters in South Africa’s freedom struggle, from pre-colonial times through the fight against apartheid; it features interactive exhibitions and guided tours. The Apartheid Museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid, while the Hector Pieterson Museum tells the story of the freedom struggle through multimedia exhibitions and historical displays.
Another regional focus is the archaeological heritage of the Cradle of Humankind, Gauteng’s only World Heritage Site. Its area includes 13 excavation sites recognised as national heritage sites. The Sterkfontein Caves yielded the prehistoric hominid skull known as “Mrs Ples.” Maropeng is the official visitor centre for the Cradle of Humankind. Together, these places offer a different historical perspective from Gauteng’s museums and memorial sites.
