Mpumalanga: Landscapes and Culture

The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains in Mpumalanga cover 40 percent of the Barberton Greenstone Belt. Their volcanic and sedimentary rocks are 3.25 to 3.6 billion years old; the mountains are a World Heritage Site. Barberton lies in the De Kaap Valley and is surrounded by the Makhonjwa Mountain Range. The Heritage Walk is one of the town’s main attractions. On the geotrail, visitors can discover evidence in the rocks of the earliest life forms visible to the naked eye. More than 350 bird species can be observed along the birding routes, hiking trails and nature reserves in the Barberton region.

Another of Mpumalanga’s scenic highlights is the Blyde River Canyon: it is considered the world’s third-largest canyon and the largest “green canyon.” The Blyde River Canyon Reserve includes Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels, Pinnacle Rock and God’s Window. Verloren Vallei Nature Reserve is an internationally recognised wetland with high biodiversity, a rich birdlife and rare and distinctive plant species.

Mpumalanga is also shaped by historic and cultural sites. The Kruger National Park covers almost two million hectares and offers a wildlife experience. It also preserves cultural treasures such as San rock paintings, as well as archaeological sites such as Masorini and Thulamela. Pilgrim’s Rest is a historic mining town on the Panorama Route. During the Second Boer War, it housed an emergency mint where the famous and rare Veld Pond was struck using hand-made dies.
